More Dvla Incompetancy

I took the engine from my Citroen ZX16v and installed it into my old red 205 and sold it to RubyNA (Luke) on here.

The ZX still had over 3 months' road tax on, so I sent the tax disk off to DVLA for a refund declaring it SORN. This was over 5 weeks ago.

I come home to find a standard letter from Ms Davies (shock!) of the DVLA saying they couldn't refund it, because of 1 of 3 reasons.

The only possible reason that matches, is point 3, where they say the claim form doesn't match the V5 records exactly. In fact "match exactly" is what is underlined in the letter I received.

All of the details looked fine: name, address, postcode; yep, all correct. Oh wait a minute: how anal can someone get?

I now spot on my V5 that DVLA have spelt my surname with 2 starting letters, i.e. 'Ssouthwell' instead of 'Southwell'.

So get this, they are creating more admin for themselves and implying that the claim is not genuine because THEY can't type my name correctly into a computer!

So I have had to return the form signed to explain the above, even though they mailed the letter to me correctly and all other details in the refund claim are spot on accurate, because DVLA entered my name incorrectly on the V5.

....

P.S. I am waiting for someone to say I should've returned the V5 once I got it to correct this extra 'S'. Well perhaps I would've if I'd spotted it; but then again perhaps I wouldn't, as who'd bother? Surely we'd all agree this is just a simple slip up; their slip up.

The funny thing is how they make me pay for it when anyone with a brain can see this is a minor typo on their part which they could just simply overlook.

What a bunch of Nazis! :D

Odd, as they've happily refunded me tax on a car of which I wasn't the registered keeper and didn't have my name on the V5 - hadn't realised at the time when I sent off for the refund, but it turned out the previous owner hadn't sent off the V5 and thus it was still in their name. However, they wouldn't action the SORN tickbox on the same form due to me not being the registered keeper.

I never did get the V5 in my name or hear anything further, but I've little doubt the DVLA were quick to issue a fine a couple of months later for the car not being taxed and not having SORN declared.

I swear they make it up as they go along sometimes. Refusing your refund due to a clear typo is utterly ridiculous (but not in anyway unexpected) especially when as above they refunded me on a car that was registered to someone else entirely over 100 miles away!

It's high time the DVLA started stamping all their documentation "E&OE". Of course this should be "errors & omissions expected".

Sseems to be a common problem with them. I have been "Sstephen" for many years on one V5.

I would ssend them a letter

" Sso ssorry for my sserious misspelling of my name - can I have my refund now?

Yours Ssincerely

******* Ssouthwell "

Intresting.

I bought a car 2 months ago that had plenty of tax, i've still yet to recieve the V5, so sod it, i will just bung it in the post as i can't see me ever recieving it.

Another car i bought had tax and mot. I drove the car for for 400 miles, used it daily for a week or so, took Lyla shopping, to work etc. Anyway, the car came off the road to be donor'd so i sent the tax back. Only to be told the original owner had paid for the tax disc by cheque and it bounced so the tax disc was void and worthless. Bastard.

The DVLA are hopeless, I can't count the number of times they have lost / or simply incorrectly reproduced V5's I have posted to them. It is without a doubt the most bureaucratic and antiquated organisation out there.

I even sent two forms in the same envelope once, strangely one was actioned the other wasn't, needless to say I wasn't amused and much ranting ensued. Lesson learnt always photocopy it before you post it. And if its really important that it gets there send recorded delivery.

After getting stung last time on the SORN for my 205, when they decided to missplace the paperwork and I had to cough up for the period in which they hadn't notified me plus the fine, Ive started doing everything online.

Found a useful thing on the web today though, if you go on the DVLA website you can actually find when your Tax is due for renewal. Useful if like me if you have no Tax Disc to look at and a perennial SORN renewal to arrange. There is no way im relying on them to keep me informed.

+1 on the DVLA being a bunch of useless slow incompetent bar stewards. I hate them with every essence of my being.

No, your V5 is not proof of ownership.
