Anyone Use A '6 'box With A 8v Lump?

Recommended Posts

Atari Boy

As per my previous thread about gearbox choice I have found a known good '6 gearbox. The question I have has anyone actually fitted one to a 8v lump? I have an XU10J2 engine from a 306 XSi, it produces 142 bhp on rollers.

I am aware of the issues of a reduced turning circle but would love to hear from anyone that has driven an 8v with one fitted.

Many thanks

I don't know from personal experience, but I'd imagine it's better suited to 16V engines that make their power at high revs. I'd imagine your engine would be a bit more grunty so might not benefit from the closer ratios.

This might help assessment of what 'box is best suited, torque is quite low.

I am after the low down ratios of my 1.6 box with good longer gears for motorway driving, what would be best?

A GTi-6 box would meet that criteria, seeing as very roughly it's not too dissimilar ratios to a 1.6 box on 1st to 5th with a 6th roughly the same as a 1.9 5th which should be fine for the motorway - 80mph will be less than 4k rpm. I've not driven an 8v on a GTi-6 'box, but I don't see why it wouldn't work, although with a decent spread of torque (as your engine looks to have) you shouldn't really need 6 closely spaced cogs to keep it on the boil.

As I said in the other thread though, I think a Mi16/VTS box would be a better compromise - you'll get a similar spread of ratios (just slightly more spaced out given there's only 5 cogs rather than 6) with approximate 20mph/1000rpm in 5th, without the steering lock issues, and with a stronger gearset to boot (GTi-6 boxes have finer pitch gears in them, and seem to strip much easier than the 5 speed boxes)

Thanks for the info Anthony, sounds as though I need to find a good VTS 'box.

An Mi16 'box would be the simpler option, as assuming you're running a 205 'box at the moment with a standard push-type clutch, all you need to do to fit the Mi16 box is swap one of the selector arms over. The VTS 'box is a little more involved, as you'll also need to swap the diff, speedo drive and the clutch arm/fork (or swap your clutch for a pull-type one).

Of course, VTS 'boxes are a little more plentiful, newer and have generally covered less miles.
