Tarmac Stage Rally Car Handling/ Set Up Advice Trouble Shooting

Recommended Posts

sam jfm

I got the 205 back on the road today and im not happy with the way it handles; it feels nervous in a straight line and when i lift off - it just doesn't feel 'planted'. The tyres are not the best really (colways) but i wouldn't expect it to feel as it does.

Any ideas on geometry settings or other settings that might improve the problem.

The spec is as follows.

Tar spec bilstein coilovers (not sure of the springs) and ADJ top mounts

Tar spec rears

22mm TB's

24mm RARB

309 FARB

Not sure on with its running camber wise but its running about 2-3 deg toe out.

Any help chaps?

2-3 deg toe out will be your problem. That is WAAAAAY too much IMO. Get it tracking parallel or 30' toe out or so.

Agreed, that toe angle is massive. Back to paralell should see it handling fine again, you could possibly try a 205 FARB as i found my car was a bit more stable over the bumps with that compared to the 309 one.

I put on the FARB to sort out the oversteer problems i was having. i have set it back to paralell - i think it was set at such an angle to get it to turn in on track

Your turn in problem is most likely due to the 309 FARB, unless of course you fitted it after you found the problem, in which case you need to look at the springs! Its a case of chasing problems around the car until you find a good compromise. I'd get rid of all that toe, fit the 205 ARB back on and find out what rate front springs you're running

Thats better! its not paralell yet maybe 0.5 out, so the more i take off the more stable it should be right? ( to a point) its still slightly twitchy at motorway speeds. .

A little bit of toe in should get rid of the twitchiness, but will also reduce turn in feel. Its all about finding a compromise between the two that you can live with. Camber will also increase the twitch.

My 205 is parallel toe and 309 wishbones and tramlines a fair amount on the motorway, but the turn in is spot on!

Absolutely , you will need some toe out , I used to set mine to 2-3 mm.

What spring rates are you running ?

Camber about 1-2 deg neg and set up some castor with your top mounts

I was under the impression that you want some toe out because fwd cars have a natural pull to center with the wheels that cause some toe in under power?

The springs are PTS Tar jobbies - i only have the adj top mounts So i will gain castor at the expence of camber?
