Can I Get Fined If Could With A Speeding Camera In France

Recommended Posts

Atari Boy

As above really, I was flashed by a fixed speed camera in France recently.

Assuming it had film in etc, can I expect a fine or points?

many thanks

Jonny

We past an old transit with a hidden cam on the autoroute at 120 mph in a hire car

The driver sh*it himself for a few weeks afterwards but no fine.

You will be ok mate

Bearing in mind the starter motor on the 205 was fooked and I was driving alone (no one to help me jump start except random strangers with little English) and I needed a pi$$ I think I did bloody well only to get flashed only once.

Not something I am too proud of, but my brother and I set off late from Biarritz to get a ferry from Calais. On said ferry was my wife and kids and I NEEDED to be there.

We went the whole way at 100+ without backing off. We were flashed many many times as we travelled through France and nothing came back to me.

As we came down the hill into Calais, my brother was driving. We were stopped by the Gendarme travelling at a very sensible 174km/h. Bugger. We were made to follow them into a services and handover a large lump of Euros and my brothers Licence. We got the licence back, but it was not easy going.

Apparantly if we were going a small margin faster we would have been walking.

Jeasus, that copper REALLY gave us a hard time.

Totally agree. One of my colleagues was caught by a speed camera there, and the fine found it's way to us via the hire company. Being in Euros he gave our company the money to transfer out our Euro account. Only problem being that our FD forgot to transfer the money.

My colleague then got stopped in Schipol the next time he passed through, due to the unpaid fine. A tad embarassing.... B)

Don't get flashed or caught speeding in Belgium, they love to fine you. A number of work mates have been had and everytime they seem to chase the money getiing your details from hire car companies, etc.

I had this very conversation last night with a friend who I travelled in convoy with last week for over 1400 miles to the south of France and back.

He was in a Z4 and I was in an S Type Jag so as you can imagine we were keeping a fairly brisk pace down the toll roads. I may have been flashed but not 100 % and a friend who travelled seperately definately did.

I'm very much doubting we'll see anything through the post.

As far as I'm aware, if it's your car then you will be ok, however if it is a hirecar then expect the fine to catch up with you at some point as the hire company will pay it and then claim it back from you, ususally with an admin fee as well. As they have your credit card details they don't even have to let you know as most hire companied have a bit in the small print that authorises them to take payment for fines etc.

Agree with this my sister is in australia for a year and hired a camper van. Caught doing 79 km/h in a 60 fine made it back to scotland and emailed it to her in oz.

It was a sneeky camera if you dont know how they work.

IIRC there was talk soon after we got back from last years Eurotrip that if you got caught (ie stopped) by the police in France seriously over the speed limit they were bringing in a new law that meant your car would be confiscated & used towards costs of your prosecution.

Don't know if it went through but wouldn't be surprised to hear it has so be careful in France as well.

Graham.

I have also heard that the laws over there are getting very tough on UK speeders who use their roads as race tracks. I don't know if today there are methods to trace owners etc to issue fines, but agree with many above that unless physically stopped then you've probably got away with it. However I know two people who got stopped at a toll and were done for speeding and their cars confiscated there and then (taken to the nearest Gendarme and had to get a cab to the ferry). Apparently they look at the distance travelled from one toll booth to another to get your average speed and can do you for that.

They got their car back after a weeks worth of wrangling but the fine plus storage costs was a little steep.

Anyhow Jonny, what you doing going faster on the motorways of France than you did whilst at the Ring??

The duel carriageway suddenly went from 110 kph to 70 for some reason, then back to 110.

As I have a 1.6 'box currently, going over 80 mph is quite a chore as it is so loud so I don't often go that fast on the public road, I just needed to pee.
