Changing A Front Wheel Bearing

Recommended Posts

d7ve_b

As above, what's a reasonable price for supplying and fitting a front wheel bearing for 1.6GTI? I've been given a price of £120 which I felt was a bit excessive?

I'd do it myself but I don't have the tools to get the hub nut off or get the bearing out/in, hence I'm getting garage prices.

£20 labour plus cost of bearing (assuming hub is off the car already)

edit: ah just seen you cant get hub nut off. Well in that case bank on 1 1/2 hrs labour @£40/hr = £60 + bearing (£15??) should be about £75 i would have thought

Thanks Matt. I expected it to be circa £70ish. I need to find a decent garage near me that I can trust...

some hubs can be a right pain though if the circlip has rusted solid so those times are assuming its a straight forward swap, but a half decent competent garage should be able to do it no probs within those times

I've only had a garage do one once because I thought it would be easier. They rang me to tell me the inner bearing race had seized onto the hub and it would need a new hub. In the end I took the strut (VW Polo) back home, removed the bearing myself with a blow torch, grinder and chisel and took the strut back to them to press the bearing in.

I cant blame them really, it took me a couple of hours to get the bearing out and for them it would have been easier and cheaper to buy a new hub as well. Just something to think about when getting quotes...

Having had fun with Peugeot front wheel bearings and in particular rusted/seized circlips, I will personally no longer do them for a fixed price due to the hassle they can be. I will do them at my hourly rate for as long as it takes me.

Autodata reckon 2.2 hrs for remove and install front wheel bearing (assuming £30 - 40/hr for labour = approx 70-100)

GSF quoting about £ 15 for wheel bearing

Sorry to jump in, What size press do you need to do a front bearing. I did a rear last week with a fork lift truck and a door way :) but has to use a 3 ton truck as the 2 ton would not do it.

I've had as much as 10 ton on a bearing to start it moving but from there on they usually only need 3-4 ish to keep them going, gives a hell of a bang as they go then you just keep on pumping till it drops on the floor.

I bought a set hubs that had new bearings fitted from someone on here. Whatever technique they used to fit the new bearings had managed to bend the caliper mount lugs making interesting braking on first drive!

I've got round rusted in circlips by drilling a tiny hole behind the groove to punch the circlip out.
