I have a 1.6 BE1 gearbox fitted to my 2.0 8v XU10 lump. The car is used as road going track car. Its great off the line but and on track but on long motorway journeys it can be a real chore.

I don’t really understand enough (if any) about gear ratios but I would ideally like the best of both worlds, the lower gears of a 1.6 box with the longer gears of a 1.9 box, is there such a thing or can one be made from combined ratios?

I have read a few threads on here but none of them cover the best of both issue.

Would a ‘6 gearbox fit? I do not care about turning circles anyway.

Many thanks

Jonny

The box I'm using might fill the bill. It's from a 306 Turbo diesel and has the following ratios:

1st 38x11 = 3.45

2nd 43x23 = 1.87

3rd 31x27 = 1.49

4th 37x45= 0.82

5th 31x47 = 0.66

F/D 19x75 = 3.94

If you are using 185 60 14 tyres, this relates to the following road speeds at 1000 revs:

1st 5.0

2nd 9.2

3rd 11.5

4th 20.9

5th 26.0

I'm only running a 1.6 litre engine in albeit a very light car but it does pull fifth at over 60mph on 185 65 14 so your 2 litre should manage it without any problem. This box makes for very relaxed motorway driving (78mph @ 3000rpm) but the lower ratios are sufficiently short to still give you a good start off the line.

This link will help you with speeds in the gears using different ratios and tyre sizes.

Hope some of this helps,

GTi-6 box will fit fine with exactly the same modifications required as to fit say an Mi16, and the ratios are roughly what you have now, with 6th being more like the 5th out of a 1.9 box.

Otherwise, sticking with a 5 speed, sounds like what you're after is an Mi16/VTS gearbox - short 1st and 2nd like a 1.6 box, longer 4th and 5th (although not quite as long as a 1.9). Again, both need some modifications to fit, VTS box more so.
