Weird Electrical Problem

Recommended Posts

ORB

So, I had a nasty electrical drain, it was killing the battery in about 12 hours to the point of non start.

The tech lads at work traced a brown wire from the engine bay to the tach relay. The meter showed about 40 amps drain then the relay was unplugged and it went normal to about 2 or 3 amps. Plugged the tach relay back in and it stayed fine. Started the car and stopped it. Back to 40 amps drain. Wiggled the relay about and back to a good safe current draw.

Bad wiring or knackered relay?

Are you sure that you've got the figures right? 40 amps is alot of current, and would drain a battery flat in less than an hour.

4 amps on the other hand sounds more plausable, and from your description sounds it's just the tachymetric relay that's sticking "on" and continuously powering the fuel pump - a sharp tap on the relay case normally fixes it temporarily, but ultimately, it needs replacing.

Thanks Anthony! Yup, took the tack relay cover off today, it's deffo sticking.

The readings were .40 and .05 amps, sorry I forgot to show the true readings.

Any one got a known working spare?
