Starting Issues When Hot

Recommended Posts

Atari Boy

I relocated the battery to the boot of my 205 some time ago. I thought I did a proper job and used quite meaty cable (25 mm² - 170 amps) from VWP.

Now since moving the battery, the car has always started fine from cold or after a quick run but if I try and drive it after a run of say 15 minutes or more it does not turn over. I don’t get any normal resistor clicking and the battery and alternator are healthy and have been tested. If left to stand for about 45 minutes it will start fine as though nothing has happened. Equally it can be bump started with ease.

What could be the issue? It has been suggested that the cable is not man enough but the stuff I am using is 1cm thick including the sleeve so not exactly small fry. Could the starter motor be at fault, even though it only occurs once the car is hot?

Sorry for all the questions but on Saturday I drove back from Germany alone which meant stopping for fuel/a piss/the tunnel was a real ball ache.

Many thanks

Jonny

Could be a starter motor issue, as I had one of my old 205's (with an original "fat" starter) do exactly this - worked fine after replacing it.

Thanks Anthony for the quick reply, I am hoping that it will be a starter motor issue but don't want to take it to be reconditioned to then find it was okay anyway.

To be honest, if it's an original style starter, I'd just replace it with a newer "slimline" Valeo starter - they seem to be much more reliable in my experience

When it happens next, try getting someone to whack the starter with a pole or hammer or summat whilst you crank it. Worked for me when my starter was playing up and the car literally did nothing, not even clicking.
