Straight Cut Gearbox

Recommended Posts

Chompz

One of the things I want to do is to get a straightcut gearbox.

Does anyone know any websites what have them, plus is there anything else you have to get in or to change it?

I don't think you would need to change anything else outside of the box as you're just swapping the helical internals for straight cuts. Someone else will be able to confirm this for you.

I'd probably look at some companies that deal with rally cars to get a price.

Don't Quaife do Straight Cut gears? Why do you need one, what sort of power are you running?

Its not the power or anything, I really like the noise nd style with a straight cut. Its just on my project list to do.

Thanks GTI6BOY for drenth!

Be cheaper to make a conversion plate and some custom shafts for something like a vag gearbox .Ive got a freind running a proven 500bhp renault 5 with one of these box`s mate to a turbo`d clio 172 engine .The gearbox is standard apart from the diff . He`s done a few runs at santa pod on it and its stood up to it and allso in daily use .

And didnt cost alot to do just a few hours on the lathe and cnc

That vid's been posted before, it always makes me laugh! A friend bought a Quaife box & diff for his Escos and i think he under-estimated how noisy they are, considering it's still essentially a road car, it's quite comical! he's toying with the idea of removing them again and making it RWD for a bit of fun it's that bad! And he spent £8k on them... B)

The gears are cut straight rather than at an angle, they mesh better but at the expense of refinement etc. Have a read;

That noise is awesome but can anyone really stand it for daily use? An hour motorway drive can drive someone mad easily.

I had a s/c set in my mini years ago, great for full on competition use but the daily grind was good at first but very wearing after the first few days.

I put a quaife SC close ration box and ATB LSD in my cavalier (high power NA engine).

The noise is fantastic and yes - ALMOST worth doing just for that.

But in reality I would not do it just for the sake of it, and only do it if your engine spec and how you use the car dictates that it is needed.

(got some great vids of my car and teh noise it used teh make - TB's at 9k and a SC gearbox rou nd the 'ring does sound fapping fantastic).

5-speed synchromesh gearkit, helical close ratio gears.

Not straight cut.

This has to be one of the most pointless things I've ever read, you're looking to spend thousands on straight cut gears just for the noise!? Do yourself a favour and spend it on throttle bodies instead, the noise is even better and you'll get an actual performance advantage from it too! :o

Ps, it is possible for straight cut gears to be quiet by the way, it all depends on the tooth profile. So you may end up with a very expensive gearbox that doesn't even produce the noise you're after!

Yes and you need a big wallet. A sequential box is a straight cut box but with a different mechanism for selecting the gears.

Realistically you are looking at £6-7k minimum, more like £10k. You will need a custom gearlever, driveshafts and numerous other little bits. I was lucky and picked up an ex VLR gearlever and part of another for a spare :)

I sold a Bacci Romano gearbox to i think CRF450 off here. That was a straight cut box, with synchromesh and a normal final drive. That was apparently reasonably quiet but as I never used it before selling I could not confirm 100%. Not sure if he has fitted it to his 306 yet.

XTrac made one for the 406 touring car, but expect to pay A LOT of money for one! The cheapest useable 2nd hand one on here is £7500, and expect to pay 5 figures for a new one.

You don't want to be spending that sort of money unless you have some serious modifications planned. A sequential 'box is only necessary if you're chasing hundredths of seconds on lap times, once the rest of the car has been properly sorted. Plus, as it will be dog engagement not synchromesh, it will be an absolute pig to drive on the road unless you absolutely master the gearchange - particularly downshifts! You'll also be replacing gear sets and dog rings quite often as they wear out.

Basically, unless you have vast piles of cash, forget about it! :)

Bodge some Austin Mini straight cut transfer gears into your box, I'm sure it'l make a pretty impressive noise

Get a loudhailer installed and shriek down it for similar effect.

Me having a gentle ride around Castle Combe trying not to get booted off for being too noisy with the screamer pipe. It is a dog box by the way before you all accuse me of changing gear like a tart.

Turn up the volume and see if you could put up with the racket for long....
