That Auto Express cover is hilarious, the motoring press all said the 206 was the new 205 GTI when it came out, then the 207 and now the 208!

Oh god that's disgusting! When are they going to drop this stupid gaping mouth and cartoon features s*ite? It's just getting ridiculous now.

With the exception of the new Focus RS and maybe the Megane R26R, none of the modern "hot hatches" have decent lines, they're all shapeless horrible blobs of crap.

Totally agree.

The whole concept of the hot hatch was a small, nimble car fitted with a powerful engine. Not some big, fat , bloated looking monstrosity.

I like the look of the Megane R26R but it hardly fits the bill of a hot hatch,

I think that its one of the very very rare modern cars that does fit the bill!! Its a hatch, looks good, powerful(ish) engine and LSD as standard... sounds good to me

Not sure why they have to keep comparing it to a 26 year old hot hatch

It doesn't make sense to compare modern hot hatches to the 205. A modern hatch will never be the same unless they can shed a couple of hundred kg and most safety features.

That's why the 205 is such a joy - light car, good chassis, great to drive. It didn't need a hugely powerful engine to go very quick.

Give me the 26yr old hot hatch over a new one any day of the week.

And that 208 looks fugly

We've had this conversation before...........(just replace "208" with "207" or even "206") :)

The one on the cover there doesn't look too bad as modern ones go. I saw a 207 THP/GTi the other day and thought it looked almost passable, I still wouldn't want one, but that one on Auto Express looks like it might be worth a look. There's no chance it will have anywhere near the grin-inducing ability of the 205 GTi but (maybe I'm starting to get older) I think something that still can whip around and handles relatively well could be worth a look. So what it's a bit heavy, at least your chances of survival in a serious crash must be massively better. 4wd turbo, certainly sounds interesting to me.

I quite like it tbh, much better than the 206 but iv not seen the rear end of it yet, looks better than the Renault with that tongue type front thing. The thing is thats the style these new cars have, the same applied to the cars from the 80's, ie the Golf-205 etc have the same sort of looks but different.

We are going on the looks, it looks to me like it would be quite nimble ?
