Rumbling When Turning Right

Recommended Posts

large

Last Friday the car (205 1.6GTi) started making a rumbling noise when going right It is not dependant on the angle of the turn, as soon as you get a bit of right hand lock on you get a rumbling sound and an increased vibration through the searing wheel.

My first thought was wheel bearing but I could not pin point were the noise was coming from. I knew I had a problem with the front hubs so I replaced them with 2nd hand 306 ones. This did not solve the rumbling as I was getting it when turning right I replaced the rear left bearing, this has had no effect.

The noise is defiantly drive chain related as the pitch goes up and down with speed and is there with the engine off. I am starting to think it is drive shaft related any thoughts appreciated.

Drive shaft its the next logical step I suppose.

Yer, but I can't think why it would do it when turning in one direction only.

Also I have noticed that it is doing it under breaking but to a lesser degree.

I had a similar problem a while back with my 205 and it turned out to be the bearing in the centre of the long drive shaft even a friend of mine who knows a lot about 205's could not figure it out, i was just about to change the gear box as i thought that could be where the problem was as i had changed all the wheel bearings when i thought about changing the shafts and that is when we found out it was the long drive shaft causing the problem.

Not sure if this will help you but its worth a try if you have spare shafts or can borrow one to try it.

I had a similar problem, discovered that the centre bearing had 'walked' down the shaft and ended up popping the seal out of the gearbox...

Popped a spare one in and problem solved

I still have this problem. Only now I have changed both drive shafts (for new/re-con ones from gfs) and have replaced the F/N/S wheel bearing for new.

The sound is like something rubbing but have had the front of the car up in the air and every thing looks OK.

Could this be gearbox, diff related? The noise defiantly sounds like it is coming from the front of the car and is present when rolling down hill with the engine off in neutral, when turning right.

Check out your top engine mount isnt rubbing anywhere around it. I had the same problem, I changed driveshafts and top bearings on the struts before I solved it.

Thanks for the suggestion. The car has GP n mounts all in good order so no movement on the engine.

I am at my wits end with this! So far I have

1: Replaced right hand drive shaft for new/re-con unit

2: Replaced left hand drive shaft for new/re-con unit

3: Replaced both front hubs for second hand units.

4: Replaced rear left wheel bearing

5: Replaced front left wheel bearing

6: Replaced differential and bearings.

The next thing would be to change the gearbox but i cant see if it is that why it only happens when turning right.

Try the front right wheel brg. Sometimes they are noisy when unloaded e.g. Turning to take weight off.

Thanks for the reply Tom. TBH I was going to change that before I go messing about with anything else. As I have said it is the second (all be it second hand) bearing on the front right, what are the odds of 2 bearing failing in the same way.

Unlikely admittedly. Have you checked out your top mount bearings? These can cause strange problems when knackered.

F me that was quick! I have not had a good look at them as I fitted new oe ones about 5 months ago. Also the noise is rotational, what I mean is the pitch changes with speed.

What i have noticed is that you do get a similar noise but not to the same degree when breaking.

Not yet, but i have not changed the drivers side wheel bearing (have the part just not got around to fitting it).

In the time it has been doing the car has past the mot so it cant be that bad.
