What Would Your Thoughts Be?

Hi Chaps, can you cast your eye over this and see if you can offer a diagnosis?

When I go to my car in the morning (or any other time when it is cold) it does not start like it did and it misses on one or maybe two of the pots for a few seconds, it will then get its breath and be fine.

It is a bit annoying. I am aware that GTi's can be a bit of an unknown quantity on tickover and starting, but this one has never been bother.

Also, I am using ALOT of fuel (I got 130 miles out of a full tank) NB - I have replaced the Coolant temp sensor and this improved things no end, but still VERY heavy on fuel.

Where would you start?

NB(2) - I have run a pressure test with good results accross the pots.

Jetronic? I'd say AFM, possibly needing setting up or refurbishment.

Yup. it is Jetronic mate. I know it has been fooked with in the past as the plastic cover has been glued back on and it looks tits.

How does one go about setting up an AFM or is this past the average garage mechanic?

I have never MOT'd it, but I could easy stick it on the MOT sniffer at work one day?

That's where I would start if you can.

If you grab a copy of a Haynes manual it details how to set up the throttle body and the throttle switch, once this is done you can check and adjust the idle speed then the CO with the screw on the AFM.

Pretty straightforward, all you need is two screwdrivers, a multimeter and an allen key, and a feeler blade set, you can ignore the vacuum gauge usage.

Top tip. Get the PDF version from M@tt's signature and then you can use the 'Find' function.

Having the same starting issue with mine,

its like it starts on 3 pots, give it a rev and all good..

But what I noticed is mine seems to have alot of condinsation coming out the exhaust on start-up, still need to do a comp test to rule that out. :)

Will be interested to see your outcome all the same ;)

If it does many short trips then its nothing to worry about, it could also be running very rich.

Yea think, sorry know mine is running rich, didnt get the chance to get the emmisions tested yet..

And yes my afm was messed around with by the previous owner or his useless mechanic ;)

I get that much condinsation on start up, it actually dampens the ground, along with soot.. So yea, its rich..

Will be trying to solve it soon as its wrecking my head :(

Hey chaps, just tested my emmisions this morning on my new co meter and no wonder ha..

It was way off, it was up at 6.5 to 7% co so that was a tad high, took me a while to get it down because the afm spring tension was way off,

i was adjusting the screw out as far as a could, not enough so id have to tighten the tension of the spring and go again.

After a few times I eventually got it to 1.5% so i was happy.

Immediatly i noticed idle was so much better and not fluctuating like what it used to, and she is idling steady at 850 to 900rpm which it hasnt done since I owned her, so happy days :D

Ill report on the cold start misfire and the condonsation when i start it cold probably in the morning..
