Cracked Exhaust Manifold

Recommended Posts

shalmaneser

Right, my exhaust manifold is good and cracked so I need to deal with it.

Is it worth getting and atainless maniflow style manifold? It'll save a bit of weight and loom sexy, and doubtless be easier to repair should it crack again but i know the standard manifold is good anyway. However the likelihood of finding an uncracked one is very low as I understand it (although I do remember someone saying something about later ones being reinforced...).

Welding cast iron is a nightmare and i don't know anyone who could do it anyway.

What have other people done? Looks like a maniflow style one is the best bet at the moment, does anyone have a system spare?

I would just put a wanted ad up and see what people have to offer, I'm sure plenty of people must have a spare uncracked one knocking about for next to nothing?

Yeah I would be the issue is that it would just crack again. Looking for a longer term solution!

Is yours is really bad ? Is it leaking ? I ask these silly questions because I've been driving mine cracked for years as long as it does not leak ...I tend to trust the original parts rather than venture into "performance" systems that sometimes on the dyno produce less power

That's the worry really, I'll take some pics today and get some expery analysis.

I'm not sure it's leaking, really.

Early manifolds tend to crack but the later ones are reinforced and seem not to. Mine had cracked when I got the car, bought a late spec one second hand and 8+ years on it has yet to crack...

I also had a cracked early manifold - a couple of attempts to weld it up failed - I replaced it with a newer 'reinforced' one. Seems to be fine a couple of years on.

Large's one for a tenner sounds like a steal!

If it was it would make loud ticking noises.

How to repair crack....

Angle grinder out and cut a V shape all the way along the crack. Drill a 4mm hole at each end of the crack to stop spreading. Weld up the crack.

The holes stop the crack from going any further and the V shape allows for decent penetration of the weld.

I did one 4 years ago on a mates engine and it still holds to this day.
