Turbotechnics Oil Pressure

Recommended Posts

Nathangti

Hi there, ive just recently turn the boost up to 4psi from 2psi from the rebuild (i no its still low but running it in slowly, want to find any problems first before i go to full power) And i was on my way home from bexhill last night and i notice the oil pressure gauge at 4 1/2 to 5000rpm was going up and down like a rev counted? On idle the gauge is fine and driving around town its pressure is brilliant but at high rpm the gauge does that? Wot could it be?

Faulty pressure switch?

Wrong oil? (at moment i'm using Mobile 1 15w 50 High performance oil)

even though its only done about 6k from new could it be oil pump?

Any help would be much appricated!

Thanks Nathan

Is your crank pulley bolt tight?

There are a few dodgy oil pressure threads and tales of woe about pattern pumps.

Anthony

Are you running the standard oil pressure sender and wiring? I've seen poor connections and faulty senders cause similar odd readings at high rpm before, assuming I'm reading your post correctly in that the needle starts randomly jumping about at high revs but reads normally at idle and when bumbling around.

I believe the crank pulley is tight mate i did evey thing a right torch settings!

And the oil pump was an uprated one from QEP engineering, Who i throught we're quite good? :)

Yes Anthony running standard wireing with a new sender!

But i have the sender on a t-piece with the oil turbo fed? Could it be that?

To be fair, as Anthony suggests, the guessometer is a bit poor. You may not have any issue at all. Just take a look at GLPoo's recent thread!

It would be the normal pattern pump at a guess as the OE ones are about £175.00 but worth it thou the old ones rarely wear out, as a few know my 6 is one 267k know and thats still OK

:) i was hoping that it wasn't the oil pump, is there any other way of testing a oil pump to see if it is that?

Has any one had any previous dealings with QEP? As they are a sponsore for this forum i throught they would be a good genuie 205 engine dealer?

Try a mechanical gauge on it.

Probably talking out of my arse as normal but if say the turbo kicks in at the 4500 revs mark wouldn't it draw more oil as its now spinning much faster? Could it be this thats possibly giving the pressure sender a strange reading?

Tom Fenton

The turbo doesn't really draw oil, it is supplied under pressure. Whether it is under boost or not doesn't make much difference.

I would guess it is the crappy spade connector onto the sender is corroded and s*itty. Cut it off and replace with a new one, and clean the spade on the sender at the same time with some emery cloth.

Cheers Tom I wasn't sure.

I had a similar problem and it was the sender. Pressure was fine until I was doing above about 4k revs then the needle on the gauge started to leap about.

Very disconcerting. :)
