Did Alloy Block Mi16's Ever Come With A/c?

So, did 1.9 405 Mi16 and BX's come with air conditioning back in the day?

405 did, not sure on the BX.

Both had them as optional extra's, with the 405 I'm sure the leather was part of the kit too.

Oh right, I assumed they didn't come with A/C as I've only seen threads on altering the belt configuration on GTI6 engines ie when removing the pump. Does that mean it's quite rare?

Am I right in thinking it's driven off the auxiliary belt or is it maybe driven off the other cam shaft (unlikely)?

The reason i ask is because a mate of a mate has an 8v with A/C who may be selling up if he fails his MOT on alot. It got me thinking whether it would be viable to swap on to my MI16 powered car.

I'd heared the older gas used in the system is now banned and the newer stuff is incompatible with the old system (perishes the seals)? but I'm just seeing if it physically possible at the minute. Besides, the guy with the A/C car might pass with his MOT anyway!

Only the pipes can be used, The pump is the wrong offset on the 8v so use a GTi6 pump (Direct fit) and you may have to mod the A/C pipes at the pump end as it's not something I've done yet.

A/C removal on the Mi engine is as easy as, No parts are required at all bar a new belt

There are replacements for the old gas that can be used, or you can convert to the gas used in newer cars pretty easily - basically just replace all the seals (which I'd do anyway) and fit a new drier canister (again, do this anyway as they're a service part and need replacing every few years). You can keep most of the 205 parts, but you need to change the pump as the pulleys don't line up.

There isn't a lot of room at the front of the car for the pump, radiator, fans and condenser, but you can just about get it to fit if you move things around a bit.

I see, so now I know some MI16's came with A/C, that means my block has the the facility to accept a pump. All I'd have to do is source a GTI6 pump, maybe some bracketry, a belt and an A/C 205 with no MOT!

The pump bolts onto the sump, but not all sumps have the mounts. I think you can swap the 205 sump over though.

The pump from any of the big Peugeots fit - 306, 406, 605.

TBH the stuff in the engine bay is the easy part. It's taking the dash out and swapping the heater box over that's probably the hard part, plus the wiring will be interesting...

405 did, not sure on the BX.

( BX did too. I have a BX16V with A/C. The compressor is the same as on the 405, the pipes, etc are different obviously. I have leather seats too, but A/C was available without leather as well. )

I didn't mention the fact that the engine didn't run, and following an impulse ebay purchase I went all the way to frigging Eastbourne to fetch it....

I've done the whole Mi16 A/C into a 205 lark. Drop me a PM with any questions you have. I've probably got some pics somewhere that I can send you too.

As Ryan says it's fitting the heater/evaporator which is the tricky bit. Harder than that is finding one in the first place. You also need various wiring, or figure it out so you can make it from scratch.

I've got quite a few spare odd bits of 205 / 309 a/c systems if you need anything.
