Recommended Posts

All Praise The GTI

Well after finally getting the car mapped on bodies yesterday at Emerald its failed its mot at work today on several typical french wiring problems but mainly on hc emissions. I believe the limit is 1200 and its 6360!!!

Im thinking maybe an air leak??

Any suggestions before i pull it apart tonight??

Gutted as mot expires tomorrow and i wantd take it ace cafe on monday :)

Plug in the laptop, knock out some fuel at idle while it sits ticking over to do the emissions test until it's a pass, re-set to where it was, job done!

Emerald will actually supply an MOT map for this very job!

If I remember rightly with the gas analyser in the exhaust you hit 3 until the injection trim goes into minus figures and keep going until it's legal, then disconnect the ECU without saving.

6360? Are you sure? That must be pretty much pissing neat petrol out of the tailpipe with that much unburnt fuel :)

What was the CO figure out of interest?

The last time I saw a car with HC that high, was when someone had been messing about with the cam timing.

Some info taken from Autodata.

And the max allowed for a non-Cat test is 1200ppm.

Edit: D'oh!! As you'd put in the first post anyway! :)

I would def look at cam timing. You can drop the CO but often the HC doesn't alter.

co 1.85%

Well its got an inlet cam but its only a petert regrind nothing lumpy

il try lower trim on laptop if get time in workshop tomorrow for retest :)

Forgot to say the problem may be in the bodies as they were badly balanced when dave checked them before mapping. ive been told to strip them down and loosen screws on spindle get them shut then retighten them. not sure if they had tamper proof screws or something tho. but il try lower trim just to get through mot for now.

And to top it off got a tiny barely 1mm stone chip this morning. went to car at lunch and now theres a 10" crack down center of screen :D

Theres always something

if it was only jsut mapped, this should all be spot on?

mine passes mot ok

does it still run a lambda?

i'd be ringing emerald up and speaking to them.

Same here, mine was mapped a few weeks before the mot and flew though with Satchell t/bs, cams etc, it does sound odd that the co is good but it's got high HC's though.

They map it for optimal performance, that doesn't necessarily mean MOT-passable...

quite possibly, but common sense, if it's a road car should be passable

or at least ask the owner

thats quite poor if it done that way, without asking

I can't see what having too much fuel going through on idle has to do with performance tbh

Get it through by tweaking the map and save it, no reason not to, and its done for next time too.

Well yes, what i meant is it's part of the parcel... They're not being paid to worry about emissions, but to set up the car for performance, but yes there's no reason why it shouldn't be an MOT-pass, given that idle is not very performance related!

I don't use Emerald my self I use MegaSquirt.

But from memory Emerald use TPS vs RPM, so if your TPS is damaged or has moved this would have messed up your tune.

On all cars I have worked on with megasquirt I dial in around 12-15deg at idle, and run a little lean with a AFR of 15, none of them have had problems with MOT's.

What sort of advance is your map running at idle.

And as said before do you have any kind of O2 sensor fitted, WB02 would be grate as you could see your real time AFR.

Good luck.

i dont have a wideband but the standard one is stil plugged in.

the problem dave said is my bodies were out of balance. not too sure why he didnt sort it tho as i just figured out how to solve what i think the problem is and did it in 10 mins. the butterflys on one side were staying open so dave cut the fuel on idle to bring revs down. and mapped it accordingly.

hopefully they are closer to being balanced or atleast shut on idle now so with any luck will pass. but im presumely it will need map adjusting to sort it out 100% and sop it downing fuel

stil need a windscreen now tho ;)

If you are desperate for an MOT just pop the screen out (and take the wipers off) for the test. All the MOT requires is a clear view of the road, if you have a screen it needs to be un-cracked and you need to have a wash wipe but if you remove it ALL it will pass.

I guess I'm lucky, I've a good understanding with my MOT tester man.

Unbelieveably a rock hits the windscreen of my track car on the way home from the test EVERY year....!

Yeah, why not? It doesn't take long to pop the screen out and put it back after the test.
