Help Me Please

Hey folks, I need to get myself 4 new tyres and it's been that long since I've had to buy any (due to car being off the road etc) that I have absolutely no idea what are good and what to avoid.

Can I have some ideas please? Car is for road use only and the wheels they are going on are summer use only, (as soon as the gritters come out the wheels come off until the end of the winter) so won't have to deal with any harsh weather.

What do you recommend?

Yokohama Paradas can be had very cheap and are a decent summer tyre in my opinion. Set of 4 on eBay are around the 140 mark. Michelin also do a good tyre that can be got through costco for around 55 a tyre if I remember right.

BF Goodrich G-Force Profiler is worth a look IMO...

I'd avoid Paradas like the plage, The worst tyre I've ever used, Well maybe not as bad as Sunny's etc but not far off,

So anything like Falken's, BFG's, Toyo's are fine

I asked a similar question a little while ago, and Henry (hengti) suggested I try a set of Hankook Ventus V12 Evo K110 and pointed me to this article http://www.hankooktire.cn/Tech/k110%20auto...sportscars1.pdf

Apparently the Clio 172/182 lot consider them to be a good tyre too.

I haven't fitted any to the Pug yet (mainly because the car has barely been used) but I bought a set for the family wagon to replace the Goodyears that were on before. They seem excellent, particularly at the price.

I've just bought a set of 205/45/16 for the Caterham too (can't get 'proper' lightweight tyres in 16" - I've got a set of Yoko 032s on 13" rims too) but I've yet to get them fitted.

What size? I've got some Falken 512's in 185/60-14 for sale.

I've been running Falkens on my 306 for the last 18 months & they are coming up for replacement but I'll be sticking with them.

Prada's have very soft sidewalls afaik, Baz & Anthony were running these on OOJ last month at Cadwell & they didn't look impressive.

Graham.

I've got Falken 912's on my '89 GTi, and Hankook Ventus S1 Evo's on my '91 GTi-S - both are very good and excellent value IMO :)

They're a mixed bag.

On one hand, they do wear very well on track and don't seem to overheat/disintegrate like most road tyres do, but on the other, the sideways are very soft on them and their wet-weather performance leaves much to be desired - although they are atleast an improvement over previous Yoko's like A539's which were little better than budget hedgefinders when the heavens opened.

If you do alot of track driving but can't justify "proper" track tyres and want to use them on the road as well then they might be worth a look, but otherwise I personally think that you can do far better, especially for a roadgoing 205.

another vote for falken and Kumho here, used BFG a few years ago, Avon's I liked on my 405.

love the michelin PE2, initial cost is greater, but IMO if you can stump up the initial cost, they will outperform most in the wet as well as dry, and last twice as long.

I agree with all of that, except for the "last twice as long" part - in my experience, the set I had didn't seem to last any longer than other tyres I've used, and thus whilst undoubtedly good, they worked out considerably more expensive than the likes of Falken and Toyo.

Yet another Falken-ite here. Loads of grip and feel and were ludicrously cheap for the quality.

Good to see a few converts to Falkens,

I first used them on my old 405 on your reccomendation and i was pretty impressed by them. I was even more impressed with them after i spent a week driving the 405 with some Goodyear GSD-3's fitted to it (they were off a friends race car and i was buffing the tread down a bit) and i thought the Falkens were better in the dry and about the same in the wet.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. Looked in to the Falcons but can't get any locally until Tuesday and I need the car for the weekend. Was going to go for the BF Goodrich as they seem a decent enough price and I have an older version on at the minute which I think performed well. However having seen M@tts post I am going to see if the Kumho's are available any where as I have heard good stuff about them from a few people including a lot of the VX220 owners. It's going to come down to which are available tomorrow though.

Thanks all, Renny

my mate has these maragoni zeta tyres in at his work and they come with a good warrenty aswell, free puncture repair and if the tyre gets damaged you only pay half price, there pretty grippy and they seem to be using them for track days aswell
