Cj 1.4 Gearbox Popping Out Of Gear

Recommended Posts

stevieboy2k

Hi All,

This is my first real post on this forum, and was wondering if anyone had come across this problem before....

I have a 1992 205 CJ 1.4 TU series, with 5 speed manual gearbox. When driving, it sometimes pops out of 1/3/5 gears, without any noise, just slides out really. This mainly happens when coming off acceleration, or when cornering. 2/4 and reverse gears are totally fine.

I have had 2 suggestions, one being to replace the gearbox. The other is that the rod between the gearstick and gearbox is tight and doesn't rotate, meaning it doesn't have enough movement.

Has anyone come across this before, and if so does the explanation above sound plausible (its one of them things where you don't know its going to work till you try it!) or has anyone got a more likely cause of this? Is there anything I can check myself to see whether something is obviously wrong?

Thanking you all in advance!

Hi,

I had this on 3 different TU engined 205s in the past.

It is or was in my cases always this little bugger - see picture.

This is a rubbermount with a metal sleeve inside - if this metal sleeve corrodes on the gear lever, this can not move anymore and will bring torsional tension inside the mount.

This will then just pull the gear out if you come off the throttle or drive over a bump.

One solution is to buy a new rod - the other is, to rip it apart (brute force and maybe a blowtorch needed here) and put it back together with some grease so that it can move again.

Same again, replace the gear rods first to see if that improves it and if not replace the engine mounts.

Thanks so much for all this, certainly pointed me in the right direction.

Is this rubber mount on the long rod between gearstick and the other levers, or is it advisable to replace all the rods?

Do you know where I can obtain a new rod/rods for the TU gearbox?

One possible problem is as I have found recently on my XS box after trying everything mention was the selector tips. On a lot of MA gearboxs from the 205 TU range they have nylon tipped selector forks and on my XS box these were all broken.

Miles sells new rods for tu engined 205's, here :
