gavbrum 18 1 Cars Posted August 10, 2010 I got a set of Peugeot locking wheel nuts but I'm swithering about whether or not to put them on my new reconditioned wheels or not. My mums Jag had to get the locking wheel nut drilled out when it got jammed. What do you lot think? I mostly keep my car in my drive but I would also hate to have my wheels nicked. Is it worth it? Or should I leave them off? Are the Peugeot ones better than the rest of them. Anyone got any good or bad experiences? Cheers, Gav
Baz 421 Posted August 10, 2010 As long as they're kept in decent condition and the design isn't a poor one, i don't see why not. Worth protecting your wheels if you value them! Just don't wang them up mega tight, they don't need to be and just puts extra strain on them when doing them up & un-doing etc.
Anthony 1,002 Posted August 10, 2010 I certainly wouldn't use the Peugeot OE ones, as they're a nightmare when (not if) the pins on the key snap off.
Stevo309 0 Posted August 10, 2010 I've always fitted them and I wouldn't take the risk. If you put copper slip grease on the threads and don't do them up mega tight you shouldn't have any problems with them seizing.
welshpug 1,645 Posted August 10, 2010 depends which type, my 405 has o.e locking bolts of a different type to the older pin type used on the 205, the same flat faced washer design so suitable to use on the 205, they're used on the 306 and 106, quite likely the 406 too. make sure all the threads are free and oiled or greased and use a torque wrench every time and you wont have issues
Cameron 16 Posted August 11, 2010 McGuard ones are the best I've come across, if you're going to get anything I'd go for those.
Tedglenn 1 Posted August 31, 2010 Dear All, sort of related...I don't have a key for my original 205 locking nuts with the 4 prongs on the key ? any ideas ? not sure i can be bothered to drill all 4 of them out and I will never find the right key. Thought i might mig weld a bar to them !! then add lots of ease it ! any other ideas ? I guess a chisel might get them to move but one slip and the wheel is trashed. Thanks Ian. McDude 33 Posted September 1, 2010 Another thumbs up for McGard (I think that is how they spell it). I've got them for my 1.9 alloys in summer and for my Rallye steelies when I go to winter trim.
Alan_M 66 1 Cars Posted September 1, 2010 Yes, they are worth it! I found out the hard way after I came home from a nightshift, parked 205 up outside house and went for a kip. Went back out in the afternoon to find the front left wheel hanging off, bent studs on that corner, dented in passenger floor pan (clearly where they levered the car up) and all the nuts missing. Cnuts The new Pug ones don't use the pins, they are splined with a matching key. But I have been told that a decent multi-point socket will get them off. When I go back to studs, I'll use the McGard locking nuts.
SurGie 54 Posted September 1, 2010 So in essence most of them are as lockable as a lock with the key left inside .
scotty 0 Posted September 1, 2010 I have had the same set of locking nuts on my car for at least 10 years and never had a problem with them, not sure who they are made by but i do remember they where not cheap when i got them, on any car i get with alloys i always fit them as someone tried to have a set off an escort turbo i had but i disturbed them when i went out in the car and the front wheel came off and its an experience i don't want to go through again if i can help it.
