Exhaust Manifold

Recommended Posts

205*31*

Hi all I was under the car recently having a poak around and noticed one of the studs is completly missing from the manifold. I currently have a noticable ticking sound under acceleration and believe manifold can be a culprit, do you think this missing stud would cause it obviously it can't be good you can clearly see black soot around the missing section :(

I am not sure if to just put a new stud and bolt in there or to replace the gasket and complete studs/bolts? be easier to just replace the missing stud with a nut :)

anyone any advice, check out the picture.

i had this on my rover where two studs were missing and had loud ticking. the gasket and missing studs were the cause

you might want to try and put a bolt in there and see if that works first?

i'd use a bolt first to see if that helps but not for the long term, if you have to change the gasket then you can put a stud in at the same time

Hopefully there is not a stud wrung in there and you can just put in a new one.It will not be too nice a job if there is a stud wrung in it.I would say you will have to replace the gasket anyway as it will most likely be no good now, looks black looking around it.

The tube you can see running vertically in your picture is the dipstick tube, this should be bolted to the back edge of the head which it doesn't appear to be doing in your picture. You can see the (blackend) head of the bolt next to the manifold with the tab from the tube underneath it.

I'd try an M8 bolt in there or just have a poke around a with a screwdriver to see how deep the hole is incase there is a sheared stud left in there.

If there isn't try fitting a bolt or new stud & nut to see if it still leaks, if it does the whole manifold will need to come off to replace the one gasket which means you'll be doing them all.

Graham.

just my luck there is a stud stuck inside and looking closer it looks flush to block :( easy job to do or not? me and bolts have never seen eye to eye in the past I hate them and they hate me

getting tools up there in situ could be a pita i reckon anyone else had same problem and sorted it?

I've sorted them before but only with the head / engine out of the car.

Good luck doing it in situ but if you have access to good airtools it shouldn't be to bad imo.

so if a motor garage happend to be removing my manifold and got a couple of snapped studs how would they tackle it? surely they wouldn't be hoisting engine out?

If there is no space then there isn't much option. I've never tried to do one in the car and I don't fancy the chances. Cylinder head off would probably be easier than engine out.
