205 Cti Restore

Recommended Posts

Ant

Hey folks,

I have a 1992 CTi – 2 owners from new, 72,000 on the clock and FSH

It’s been dry stored since 2003 but ive finally got my finger out and hope to make it a very tidy example.

There wasn’t a lot wrong with it, but what started off as a few “bits and bobs” has ended in a complete bare shell restore ( i’ll get some pics up soon )

I am now at the point where I’m nearly ready to spray the base coat, but have hit a snag

Colour !!!

I intended to go cherry red – It was red originally and has got red carpets etc, so made sense to just go for that...

BUT – i love laser green.

So my two issues...

Value/originality – I’m plan on keeping the car, especially nice examples are harder to find..

opinions on a colour change please ? – Would a real enthusiast ( say in 10 years time ) be put off by a colour which wasn’t standard to CTI’s ?

Interior – Carpet and door card colour – At the moment they are red... Did any CTis come with black / grey carpet.. If not, what about the CJ.. The one i recall seeing had a dark blue carpet to complement the demine. Can anybody confirm i can get black / grey from a CTI / CJ ?

Oh and seats are full leather, so the red on them isn’t an issue

Cheers

i would say keep it the same for the future value factor.

and unless the car has a full respray i mean EVERY thing then i defo would keep it the same colour

same here, original all the way. Then sell it and buy a laser green 1.9?

Also door seals.

If carpet and door seals are knackered, I'd forget about it tbh and just enjoy as is.

You could spend hundreds sorting just those.

Roland Garros Convertibles came with almost black Carpet - and the latest CTIs had grey carpet similar to the griffe.

Red it is then....

Next question though...

The paint supplier has advised that the 205 cherry red has several codes.

1 being 2pack cherry red

the other being a base coat and laquer.

Any suggestions to which i should go for ?

cheers

I think it'll have been laquered if it's 1992

I've got a 89 ph 1.5 and it's not laquered

If you get some rubbing compound on the paint by hand the red will transfer to the cloth if it's not laquered.

If you have an unpainted shell this test wont be much use though ;)

Taken from this site. 1992 cars are in a bit of a grey area it seems? ;)

I'm doing a F plate Cti bare shell rebuild

<--------

Going to paint it original cherry red as I can't be bothered changing the log book, and I think if I ever come to sell it, I'd sooner buy a car that was it's original colour, so I think it would sell better too.

Had a Laser green Gti before, nice colour. I always thought it looked best on evenings with the sunset.

They never did a Laser Cti and When it comes to styling or colour changes I prefere to be original.
