Harsh When Lifting Of Throttle - Engine Mount(s)?

Recommended Posts

Matt205

Hi Guys,

I have recently purchased a 1.6 GTI (1990), which I have a couple is niggles I would like to resolve. When driving around town and lifting off the throttle, I get a harsh feeling/thud from the car, as if the engine mounts are knackered. This is worst at low-mid revs in second gear. Is this a common issue? Is this likely to be top bottom or both?

Edit: What is the best method to test/check the mounts - rock the engine/visual inspection etc? Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

Matt

The 205's are a little jumpy on and off the throttle due to the nature of the engine management, however you should not really get a thud.

The usual culprit is the lower engine mount as this restrains the engine from rocking about. Easiest to press a new mount in with the lower casting removed from the engine, however this means the drivers side shaft needs to come out.

Easiest way to test is to have an assistant watch the engine with the bonnet open, whilst you take up the clutch with the handbrake firmly applied- obviously only take up the clutch enough to see the engine move about, and don't do it for too long.

If you are not sure I can have a look at it with you if you fancy a ride to Rotherham.

Thanks for the response. Jumpy is a better description. I guess I may just have the std characteristic, but I'll check it out anyway.
