Spent The Day At Palmer Sport

Recommended Posts

JamieTonks

A couple of days ago my self and my girlfriend went to do the Palmer Sport GT day.

For those who dont know is about £450 and includes a full meal, and afternoon tea and then about 20 mins driving the following with full driving tuition throughout.

The cars we drove were a Caterham Superlight which was awsome and I know want one lol,

A Porsche 911 GTP which tbh I was a little disapointed but it felt tired, low on power and for some reason i couldnt get it to shift down lol,

A clio cup race car which I thought was the bets of the day and was only about half a second slower in this than the 911 on the same track lol. The grip and the way it goes through the racing gear box is just brilliant

A BMW M3 GTP which is a stripped more powerful version of the normal M3 with APS all round etc, was very powerful and tbh in a different league to the M3. It was more agile than I thought it would be but was a little heavy under breaking. However was quick in a straight line and through corners.

The grilfriend who has never done anything like this was a little worried she would make a prat of herself did realy well. I also got her a passenger ride in a Jag JP1 which was the fastest thing I have ever seen corner. The change of direction was simply savage

She came 2nd in the 911 race, 7th in the Caterham, 6th in the M3 and 9th in the Clio and cam 5th overall on the day. The instructers realy helped her with her confidence and got her to go quicker and quicker each track, each car.

For myself I was hoping to do reasonably well however as ive only done 3 trackdays in my life with one been 2 yrs ago and the others about 5 yrs ago wasnt expecting to do as well as others. However lol I came 1st in the 911, 1st in the Caterham, 1st in the M3 and 1st in the Clio

The guys running the day reckon it was only the 2nd time someone has won every race on the day!!!

The instucters have told me I should look at doing some kind of racing as I would be competitive Im over the moon lol and now looking/dreaming lol of doing something like the MLR Sprint series or something from the 750 motorclub funds permited

Need to realy understand what costs are to take part in a race series

It was a great day and even though £450 is quite a bit for some at the moment the amount you get over a red letter day etc is night and day

Ive got a few vid to upload.

1st is me in the M3 getting used to the track and starting to increase my speed however I then destroyed the gearbox LMAO. I think its a software issue as It was when I turned the traction control down however it didnt sound good lol

2nd is me again when I was given another m3 to try again and set a lap of 67.9 on my last lap which they said for someone with limited experiance is quick. You only get about 10-12 laps in it and get better and better with every lap.

3rd is Rachel in the M3 who did a 74.3 getting also faster and faster thoughout

Jamie

1st run when i break it

2nd run when I set my fastest laps

other vid are uploading now and will get some pictures later

Comedy noises from that rather expensive gearbox. Looks like a cracking day out though! Good job on the lap times.

Jamie, as an ex-Insructor myself at Palmers I'd like to congratulate you on a really good drive; you certainly seemed to be enjoying yourself. Do you remember the name of your Instructor? He was absolutely excellent and hearing his comments about shuffling the wheel and power power power took me right back. His instructions were clear and timed to perfection and when you bear in mind, that he probably takes 30 people round during a day you can understand how physically and mentally taxing it is.

Although it's a lot to shell out in one go, looked at in terms of what other venues offer, time behind the wheel and the efforts made to help you achieve your potential it must have few equals.

John

Their is a camera already mounted in a few of their cars and you have to pay for a memory card to record it onto :D

Yes I thought it was. He's a senior instructor and one of the best there. A really nice guy. I'm sure he was as pleased as you were, not only to win his event to win the others as well.
