Removal Of Industrial Residue From Paintwork/glass

Recommended Posts

There is an ongoing issue where I work about deposits left on cars from a combustion test rig exhaust. Basically cars have been covered in white specs (like a thin mist of paint)

We have just received this message from the site management:

"Yesterday I brought on site an expert who does body work repairs for Toyota. He thinks that the deposits can be removed using an oxalic acid technique and is today going to do a trial removal on one of the affected vehicles. Windscreens can be cleaned safely without scratching by using traditional wire wool. ... The process is quite complicated and time consuming so it will not be a case of getting the 'street car wash chaps' in to do a mass exterior valet."

Luckily my car was parked at another site at the time but I'm just curious as to what this oxalic acid technique is, if anyone would like to explain it to me. Also what do people think of taking wire wool to their windscreens? <_<

Wire wool on the windscreen should be fine, I work in a glass factory and it's one of the things we use to clean up old lead work and remove water marks from failed units.

From the website -

Direction for use: Shake before use and apply by sponge or cloth over the surface of the vehicle. Leave on the surface area for 5 minutes and then rinse thoroughly with clear water.

Doesnt sound too complicated and time consuming!

Potential Health Effects

----------------------------------

"Oxalic acid is corrosive to tissue. When ingested, oxalic acid removes calcium from the blood. Kidney damage can be expected as the calcium is removed from the blood in the form of calcium oxalate. The calcium oxalate then obstructs the kidney tubules."

Eh...bollocks to that, I wouldn't want that stuff near me! :D

It's just regular wire wool, not one of them stainless pan scrub things though, I'll get a photo of some tomorrow if I remember.
