Chassis Numbers

hello all,

im currently investigating the identity of a 205 gti, which i believe to be rather suspect.

the VIN plate looks to have been tampered with and the chassis number above it on the scuttle panel has rotted away. where else can i look to find the chassis number? is there somewhere on the sill? tried a search but couldnt find anything.

I know on mine the chassi number is hard to see where it has rusted before at the scuttle panel. Think a few cars are like that nowadays. As for the vin plate that is pop rivited on just below it, if the numbers look tampered with walk away. The numbers are pressed out the way incase that helps you. I know I took my plate off to have the car painted. Is that what you maybe mean by tampered? I have never seen a vin stamped elsewhere on the chassi [on 4 I have seen down to the bare metal], but maybe the last owner etched the windows, might be of some help?

its ex- closed stage rally, but looking to be a modified road car.

yeh its been repainted and larger than OE rivets used to put the VIN plate back in place. it looks like its going to be a VIC check / Q plate, harldy anything on it is original.. ill check the glass though..

 

i could have sworn there was somewhere else, but cant see anything..

Assuming the vin on the scuttle hasn't rusted right through, get some blue tac or sellotape and you can take an imprint of the chassis number punched into the scuttle from underneath it.
