Rusty Bores

Starting to put my plans together of a new engine build. Plan is to run an XU10J4 with 1mm decked from the block which should create 11:1 CR and bring the pistons up flush with the block, going to combine this with my petert stage 1 inlet or depending if i have valve to piston clearance stage 2's.

Going to run this on DTA with a Gti6 inlet and all being well move to ITB's if the engine works succesfully.

Anyway, i want to run standard 86mm pistons and avoid the dreaded bore wear the iron blocks seem to suffer from, which is where my rusty block comes in...

Been sitting in my shed for 2 -3 years and has developed some rust and pitting on the bores

2 are good, 2 not so good... pictures...

I think picture 4 highlights how it looks with the naked eye with the pitting being the worst damage

My reason for persisting with the block is because it "was" a 35k engine with mint bores, not something thats easy to find these days.

The rest of the engine is scrap so if the block is salvagable i will get another xu10j4 and transfer the decent bits to this block.

My one thought is a vinegar bath.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Thanks James

I'd get it honed and see what the tolerances and finish are like

The block is also for scrap now, unless honed

I'd say the block is scrap, I;ve given up honing these as the lip at the top is far too much.

My engine with 45k on it only just made it for Forged Pistons

What kind of crap must they be made out if they are done at 45k!

Thanks for the comments guys, think my next step will be to conduct the vinegar bath experiment and see how it looks
