Oil Cooler Options

Recommended Posts

On my MI track car I have no oil cooler be it air or water !

After 7/8 laps tonight my oil temp was on the wrong side of 130 degrees so I thought best come in and let it cool down,The water temp never got above 90 degrees out on track.

When I rebuilt the engine I disconnected the original oil/water cooler as I broke the connection at the thermostat housing.

Is the original oil/water cooler able to keep the oil temps down to a safe level or am I going to have to go with an oil/air set up ?

All the big powered cars I've seen run an Air oil cooler. Personally on an MI engine I'd run a air cooler either a 16 or 19 row type.

The advantage of running a water type oil cooler is the oil will raise to is working temp quicker and can be managed by the engine coolent temp.

I run a 16 row air oil cooler on my GTI-6 and see oil temps 90-110 on road and track. I may upgrade to a 19 row oil cooler soon.

Hope this help your decision Ben

The oil to water heat exchanger will help oil temps, but at the expense of increased water temps. This is fine in the 405 that the engine came from as the radiator is big enough to cope, however not ideal in a 205.

Therefore the best option really is to go for an oil-air cooler. However beware as oil that is too cold or overcooled does not burn off moisture, and so in its own way is also as bad for your engine as running it too hot. Seriously consider either a thermostatic sandwich plate, or blocking off the cooler when not on track.

Oil to air it will be then.

I'll drop the oil before I use car and try and source a cooler kit for it.

Thanks again

the oil that has seen 130+ temps remove and fit fresh oil ASAP B)

Does that not depend on what oil has been used ?

The Silkolene 10/50 pro S race oil works better with the hot temp so im now thinking of using a heat transfer with my VTS engine, so the oil is warm quicker for longer.

130+ is hot and quite a few of my mates who run cossies say 120 is about the max you really want to see, if you seeing higher you need to address your cooling,

It's just my personal opinion that 130+ I would drain before doing another track day. But hay, if people feel that's ok I won't argue B)

I run silkolene pro s and nothing else in my track car, on A hot day on track I see max of 110 :), and trust me it gets abused
