Thinking Of Getting A New Car

Recommended Posts

treesimon

Hi all,

Its about time I took my 205 off the road and got a new car.

I've had a little look around at hot hatches that are on the market and like the look of the Clio 200 cup.

I would like to get something that will become iconic as the 205 is and have fun in.

Has any one experienced one or got any opinions of them? Good or bad opinions welcome.

Miles

Not road ones, only the Cup one's, But they go **** well for what they are, I think the power claim is a bit OTT but still a quick car which is all that matters and pretty safe too.

raced one off a roundabout down a dual carriageway in the teg and he was quick we level pegged all the way till we caught up traffic, he turned right I turned left after a quick thumbs up to each other so I'd say yes they are quick but handling, I say dunno.

I saw some cup vehicles at Oulton too and they were very very fast. A mates got a normal 182 and wasnt that impressed to be honest

I raced a new 200 in my modded 6 once and there was very little in it maybe due to weight. He only flew passed me cos I missed 5th :)

Must say i thought a teg would be substantially faster

I've been looking around abit now, and like the renaultsport Clio 200, but part of me isn't to sure of the build quality compared to some over manufacturers. The German in particular seem much better.

Audi a3 seem good but part of me just doesnt like them. Thinking of a golf gti now. Not a brand new one there around £25k but possibly the edition 30 with low mileage. Anyone got any opinions on these.

Bearing In mind I won't be taking it out on track days. Something fun to drive, goes and handles well but is a good daily commuter car. Looking at something in the region unto £20k new. Less if used.

What about the new Renaultsport Megane? Think they are around £23K new and the build quality on them is as good as any german.

They look brilliant too!

For me only 2 choices:

Mini Cooper S (R56 - with Turbo) very feminine looking but a great car, or a 200 without the cup chassis if you are not tracking it as I think it might be too harsh/tiring unless you are always on it.

My brother is looking at getting an Alien Green one with cup chassis - but he likes track days.

You can get delivery mileage ones for £15K (one at Arnold Clark Wigan in red with 80 miles for £14995) - a good deal considering it has the Recaros and would have cost £18K or so.

Best Hot Hatch in Evo for a long time now and they know their stuff!

Too big? Its probably the same size as the Golf or A3 you mentioned!

I do like the clio though, and think I prefer the front of the 197 cars to the 200.

It might be me but they just look longer than the golf, I don't think the A3 is for me. But the build does look good.

As for the 197 I do like the looks but speaking to a couple of Renault guys they mentioned a few faults with it being, air con. Recaro seats wearing out even after 20,000 and cold start kangarooing, which would have been fix with an ecu update under warranty. The guy said that these problem have been solved on the 200.

The thing I like about the golf gti mk5 is the seats with the tartan centres although a little chavish(no the right word really) they will remind me of my 205.

I've thought about the mini but like already mentioned it's feminine in my opinion.

It's gonna be a toss up between the Clio and the golf.

The Clio I think is the better car. But those Germans are good engineers!

Ye they do look longer than a Golf. It might be me but I find the Golf a bit boring!

What about the Fiat Arbarth 500 or Punto? Seen a red Arbarth Punto with white wheels and it looked really good, something a bit different too!

Just remember that there's a big diference between perceived quality and actual build quality, and some of the German brands seem to be very good at getting the former right whilst cutting back on the later...

I can't speak first hand on car build quality but speaking to a body shop owner he said that generally speaking golfs, audi's and Hondas seemed to have been built well when he work on them but that Renault didn't seem to be to the same standard.

I know from an engineering point view with large web printing presses that Germans do seem to put a lot more thought into there machines, especially when it comes to servicing and parts renewal. I.e having access to consumerable parts and and using proven and tested tech. Spares drawing, out of hours services. I know that this has no bearing on the car industry. But is something I can relate to.

No company can get everything 100% right, it just who's closer to it.

I've got an open mind to which to go for and really just doing research at the moment. All comments are valued.

well as in build quality vw does beat the citroens peugeots renaults etc! but thats but thats more like trim and things like that, vw and audi's tend to be bolted together and not held together with plastic clips.

How did you find the car? Any reason for selling it? Still undecided what to get at the moment.

My fiance was looking for a new car a while back, our local Renault dealer was doing a 200 cup on the road for £13500 at the time. Could have had a black one there and then, or 6-8 weeks for whatever spec we wanted.

Was typical special offer where they needed to sell x number of cars to hit a target with Renault.

Would strongly recommend looking around dealers before considering used!

Does that deal mean you pay the deposit and couple of fees then 24 months at £199 then after those 2 years you either pay the £8574 or simply hand it back, bit like a private lease deal sort of thing?

With PCP you either hand it back and you can get a different car or pay the final instalment fee and keep it.

It's a good idea but I would'nt personally go for it myself.

hmm dont like the sound of that then as end up having to get some other car which you may not like or paying the final fee. I keep meaning to look into private lease, I know they cost a lot but getting fed up driving old stuff all the time so it may work for a couple of years

Nah they're all the same, the only difference is the quality of the material clipped to the body.
