Slight Wobble On Gearstick

Well finished working on the box today. All is good no leaks and everything is working. But the gearstick wobbles around alot. Is it just a matter of tightening up the gear linkages as i have not done that.

A wobbling gearstick is usually caused by either a worn lower engine mount or a driveshaft/CV joint issue. As you have just changed the gearbox I would imagine it is driveshaft related in your case.

does it have play in it or is it actually wobbling about?

 

if the latter then as Kieran said above, if the former then replacing the bushes in the gearstick and the L-shaped quadrant on the subframe, as well as checking that the ball joint on the subframe is tight, will contribute to a tighter stick

I assume its the driveshaft. It never wobbled before i changed the box and when removing the driveshafts, the drivers side came apart. I pushed it back in and it still rotates as it should. With it all bolted up i can move the driveshaft abit. Is that bad?

The inner joint will pull apart quite easily, does the engine wobble?

 

I have just changed my short shaft for this reason, not had chance to check it though

Changed the shaft tonight and still have a wobble. The other shaft is fine, so they are ruled out. This has only happened since the gearbox change so it has to be something simple! could it be the gear linkage? or maybe the top engine mount??

are the gearbox bolts still tight?

 

how old are the engine mounts?

 

if you need a gearbox mount i have a brand new one here that i brought to test if mine were shot.

Check the 2 hockey stick bolts that go through the bottom mount securing the intermidiate bearing.

Mines always had a slight wobble in 2nd since I've known the car (1996). Since then it's had 3 different gearbox (for diff ratios), a differnt engine, probably 2 or 3 sets of driveshafts (replacements and 309gti setup etc), a couple of bottom forks and different engine mounts, also new shift rods to replace worn ones etc and it's always been there to some degree!! None of that list was changed to erradicate the wobble, more to modify the car but it's just something I noticed [that it didn't seem to make a difference!].
