Its fair to say my GTI gave up :D

Pulling it apart, I've found that the oil pump pretty much failed.. Causing the cam to seize like a theif in spotlight LOL.

Two small marks on the pistons which can be dressed.. So i'm guessing i'll need a rebuild on the head, bottom end bearings, rods..

Is there anything I'll need to know when rebuilding it? Like a weakness in the XU engine that I can cure whilst doing it or?

Any advice would be massively appreciated.. It'l be my first engine build! Ideally I'd like it a little faster, maybe some headwork.. So if anyones got any bright idea in mind, let me know!

Cheers

Rare for an XU oil pump to completely fail, so sounds like you've been unlucky - worse that usually happens is the crank pulley bolt comes loose which then stops the oil pump turning.

Personally I wouldn't bother getting the head flowed unless it's by someone with proven results - I'd just tidy up any casting defects/mismatches in the ports and throats, but otherwise just rebuild the head with some three angle seats, new guides as required (exhausts in particular seem to suffer badly) and it'll be fine. IMO it's worth skimming a little extra material off to bump the compression up a touch to 10:1 so long as you run it on SUL (which you should do anyway, as pulling the timing back enough to run boggo UL on a 1.9 makes them feel flat and horrible).

If it's a 1.9 GTi as per your signature, then take the opportunity to fit a lighter 1.6 GTi flywheel while it's apart - well worth doing for the £10 or whatever a flywheel will set you back.

Got it all apart, the oil pump shafted itself due to a dent in the sump  So a sump guard is on order too.. I'll make a nice shiny one :)

I've got a new oil pump, gaskets, rings, bottom end shells, cambelt, head bolts, oil filter, plugs.. Anything else i'll need?

I've also managed to get a head thats been recon'd and had new valves fitted, it still needs the ports cleaning up of all the carbon which i'll do. Can i still get three angle seats ground? And at what degree? Also, its a head from a '93 and mines an '89 F Reg.. If that matters? And what size do you skim the heads to, in order to acheive 10:1 CR?

One more thing, the bottom of one of the pistons has had the sort of skirt broken off, the little tag (There's two on each piston, one per side).. Should I grind off the other side and clean up the bottom of the piston and balance it as much as possible, or should I try and get hold of another piston? Baring in mind money's getting alot tighter now.. Haha. Bloody Pug.

Thanks Ant!

From memory, roughly a kilogram or so.

I'm sure a search will reveal the exact weights and thus difference between the two.
