Gearbox Won't Come Off!

Recommended Posts

grantley1988

When the gearbox went on the motorway, even though it was in neutral on the gearstick the car was stuck in gear. For me to get the car on the drive someone had to be in the car to press the clutch in to move the car..

Now i am positive i have every bolt of the box and i can move it around to my hearts content but it feels as if it is caught on something. Could it still be in gear so it will not release of the clutch?

If i move the selector fork on the box i can hear it changing... I have had a good 20mins wriggling it about and it will not budge!

Help guys!

The gearbox being in gear won't prevent it from coming off, have you removed the plate underneath the gearbox by the sump held on by three 10mm bolts?

If not, that does a good job of kepping it all together & only allows it to move a few mm away from the engien block.

Graham.

You have removed the flywheel cover, haven't you? You wouldn't believe how many people that catches out...

Being in-gear won't stop the gearbox coming off.

Have you removed the bolt that goes the "other way" to all the rest from under the car? (Screws into gearbox from the engine block side)

Follow the sump to the edge nearest the gearbox, there is a thin steel plate attached to the gearbox with 3 bolts.

New box is on after the worst 45mins off my life! now i am a little worried! where the clutch cable attaches to the box, the arm it connects to is not moving to much. On the old box which is on the floor i can move the arm much more.

Please tell me i have not done something wrong.....

nope, nothing wrong there, that would be the clutch stopping the arm from moving more.

My advise would be to hook the clutch up and try the pedal before you go any further as the release bearings can come off, especially if you had trouble getting the box on and accidently moved the arm to far.

Its ok, everything is back on now :) and working. Just have to fill the box with fluid and we are good to go

So pleased with myself after having done nothing mechanical before!
