Tranx Lsd Bedding-in Procedure

Recommended Posts

Cameron

I'm really struggling to find some information on how to bed-in the Tran-x diff, a lot of threads have mentioned it but none have actually described it. Does anybody know what's involved? My diff didn't come with any sort of instructions.

Also, after searching around the best oil seems to be Castrol Syntran, does that sound about right?

I didn't know there was a bedding in procedure, just went out and used it.

I spoke to OPIE about gearbox oils recently and they said stick with usual grade but just by a good quality one, they suggested Amsoil, Redline or Fuchs.

Bed it in? What an utter load of nonsense. Just drive it! It's a limited slip differential, a friction device which will take a hammering, wear and will spend the rest of it's life wearing away. You don't need to bed it it, make the most of it before it's worn away.

Ok.. a lot of people on here have mentioned bedding in procedures so I'm not quite convinced. Brakes are also a friction device that take a hammering and they certainly need to be bedded in!

Thats a valid point, though with brakes a fairly simple process, a diff on the other hand would require an amount of slip to function so how do you go about doing that sensibly is an interesting quetion.

I think i'd be tempted to ring Tran X and ask them to be honest.

I have no idea!

Maybe drive round in circles for a bit?

Just drive it normally, you will find that it does bed in, and the performance will get better from when you first use it.

IIRC the recommended bedding in procedure is to drive in a figure of 8 at slowish speed for a few minutes - if that wasn't Tran-X then it was for one of the other plate diff manufacturers.

Thats what they recommend for Kaaz diffs. No idea if its the same for a Tran-X

Ok, thanks for the advice. Will just run it as it is and get some Silkolene Silktran in there if I can find some.

Shame their website is about as clear as mud!

Eventually found the information on there:

When all new parts are fitted if possible they should be subjected to a run-in period of 30-50 miles of light use after which the oil should be changed.

Sounds like it doesn't really matter if you run it in or not to be honest!

Baz
Plate Type Limited Slip Differential bedding-in Procedure;

  • Fit differential.

  • Book trackday.

  • Attend trackday, make yourself some space, enter every corner a little too fast, and come off the throttle hard just before you apex. Cue rear of car trying to overtake the front, apply opposite lock and mash the loud pedal appropriately.

  • Result; Big sideways skids in a FWD car inducing big cheshire grin & other attendees asking if said car is RWD & a well bedded-in diff.

I think that's how it may end up for me..

I'm with Baz; after a new set of plates, at least, my bedding-in procedure was right foot down, left foot up, and off down a 12 mile rally stage  mind you, granted, there was probably a few hundred yards drive from the service pitch to the stage start to let it 'bed in' <cough> :P

No harm in changing the oil after 50 miles though is there. For the sake of £20...
