Very Lumpy And Very Slow To Rev

Recommended Posts

hi there, ive just replaced the headgasket on my xu10j2te .I got the engine back together last night,it fired up more or less straight away but it runs like a bag of spanners,no power , very lumpy and very slow to rev,it sounds alot like a scooby. I have done the usual checks, spark plugs,ht leads etc. I have done an extensive search but cant really find an answer to my question. i am wondering now if i have the cambelt fitted wrong?? I didnt personally do this part but i know he used two bolts, one to lock the the cam pulley and the other for the crank. is it possible the cam is out by a couple of teeth?

Thanks,matt.

These engine suffer with the outer section of the crank pulley coming unbonded from the inner section and slipping round so the timing hole is no longer in the correct place. I would either buy a new pulley or use a 205 gti one to time up the engine.

Thanks for the quick reply,i've been scratching my head all night, haha. So a 1.9 pulley should do the trick. I'll give that a try and if that fails back to drawing board.

Had another quick look today and found a ht lead not sparking due to loose connection. Rectified this school boy error and it runs better although nowhere near as good as before, still fairly lumpy but revs ok. I'll check the pulley tomorrow and see if it's slipped. It's now also developed a small earthquake inside the car, I think somethings touching somewhere, time to get the ramps out again. Also another mystery, when I took it for a spin, it's developed a significant amount of turbo lag whereas there was practically none before?? Appreciate the advice, thanks.

i dont know much about the turbo'd lumps but would def timing checked n double checked after what was said above as when i did my mi16 cambelt it slipped a tooth on the inlet cam and it ran  but not like before and soon realised my mistake

have you checked allthe small vacuum pipes? there will be one for the ma sensor which IIRC on these is in the ECU like the S16 engine.

yeah,i checked the little vaccum hose which goes from inlet to the pipe on the ecu,and all other breather hoses etc are connected.thanks.

i managed to source a pulley from a gti6 and found everything lined up the same so i guess that rules out the slipped pulley theory. The car has now died! I had a spare ecu so i swapped it,took it for a spin, all the same ie (a bit lumpy and laggy till boost),then it just died. so i swapped ecu back and still nothing. It turns over but im not getting a spark. Does anyone know if these ecu can lock up?

unless the gti6 pulley has also slipped, from memory the pin hole is meant to be 70 degrees from the woodruff slot.

ha ha,that is a possibility but i would have to be seriously unlucky for the gti6 pulley to slip and land in exactly the same spot as the original one, although i have had stranger things happen. I will double check to if the holes at 70 degrees, thanks for your help.

For the time being still no spark... :)
