Advice Needed On Gearbox Choice

Recommended Posts

carlh.1

Just wondering if anyone knows of the best ratio gear box to get the best out of my engine, the cars just been remapped peak torque is 200lbft at 3596 and peek power 200.3bhp at 5726. At the minute its got a 1.6 be3 on it although the acceleration is realy quick it just seems too revvy as im constantly changing gear. Any advice would be great cheers carl.

For cheapness, a boggo 1.9 box would probably be just fine.

To be honest for track use I'd keep that gearbox. I run the same in my turbo (although mine is 1600cc, but makes similar numbers).

Your peak power is getting on for 6k, so assuming that it doesn't drop off massively over peak power, it should be good for about 130mph which will be plenty for most UK circuits. With the advantage that as long as you are handy at stirring the box, most of the other cars won't see where you went accelerating out of the slower corners.

This is the problem, the car has electic acceleration out of the corners so dont want that to go by using a box with longer ratio lower gears, Its just murder on the motorway reving around 4k at 75mph, power does drop off around 6k dave walker didnt rev it any further then that. Im curious what specs your engine tom to get that torque out of it with 200hp?

The torque in my sig is 278 NM- which equates to roughly 205 ft lb. So really very similar power and torque to your engine.

Mine also revs high on the motorway, but I don't often go a long way in it, and I can just about put up with it for the manic acceleration it has.

Hi Guys,

I have an Mi which I used to run with an Mi box, I found this too long for track days. I wanted to change to a 1.9 and bought one but it wouldn't go into 4th. Then I had a change of heart and thought 'just go for the 1.6' for shorter ratios. It's fine and quick for UK tracks but is horrible for any distance as I've just found out driving it to the 'ring. it was pants on the ring too tbh, sat flat out with slower acceleration (but much higher top end) cars going past, laughing at my 120 max and bleeding ears!!

I would say it depends on what you want car to do!

An Mi16 on a 1.6 box should do 136 ish in top at 7200RPM, are you sure you have a 1.6 box if you are only hitting 120?

So you have a rev limiter at 6400 revs then? That would be 120 mph with a 1.6 box.

Or a much smaller wheel/tyre combination?

Sounds more like a 4.4FD.

Hi Rob

I spoke to you last Sunday at the ring. My Mi on a 1600 box was pulling over 130mph on 195/50/15 tyres, through Quiddelbacher-Hohe/Flugplatz area. Rev limit 7400rpm.

Hi Tom,

Good to speak to you last week.

My rev counter has a mind of it's own over 5k but it certainly didn't seem to be or for that matter want to be pulling any more!! :P

Mind you I was going off my satnav speed which was still in place after the journey over, I have this mounted in front of the speedo and just refer to it as I have never been a one to trust the speedos built in inaccuracies.

You were right about carbon roof sales tho mate, plenty of customers until they are actually available then everyone has gone very quiet, glad i didn't order 5 as per my first plan!!

catch you later

Rob :D
