Exhaust Advice

Recommended Posts

johnhenry

Noticed today that the exhaust manifold is slightly cracked (and very old) and the joints along the rest of the exhaust are rusting badly and am looking at replacing the whole system.

the 1.9 8v engine is standard so its dealing with standard hp

your thoughts on a good manifold, standard part or good aftermarket?

your thoughts on a good system manifold back? it doesnt have a cat only a mid silencer, which i kind of wont mind if its not there :)

and backbox's? i was thinking a 2'' as that sounded nice on a friends 1.6gti 106, but will this give good performance? whats the best setup to go for?

cheers

Best bet for a standard engine is a standard phase 2 system, Peugeot can still supply these, or an Arvin Meritor aftermarket seems to be the closest match to the ECIA original, bosal arent too far off, but can be a tad loud.

Note that I specify phase 2, this is the two piece system where the downpipe is welded to the centre box, this is a larger diameter system than the earlier 3 piece.

Nearly all the 8 valve XU exhaust manifolds are the same bar some slight revisions across the years, that includes the 2.0 8 valve engine.

What engine do you actually have? Unless it's super modified you'll be hard pushed to beat the standard system.

The manifolds do crack, but usually someone has a good one on here. It is worthwhile getting the proper downpipe because this is actually quite a neat part as it has a divider down the centre. Cheap imitations never quite get this right.

After that you really are going to be pushed to beat standard, it is not restrictive and follows a straight path to back of the car.

Have a search - there are loads of exhaust threads on here.

Group N system does that and it is also cheap. It also lasts about 8 months.

Stick with the standard set up.

I've just taken a complete exhaust system off my 205 and will be putting it up for sale - it's a Bosal downpipe (no split), Pug Sport GrpN centre pipe and backbox. Only just come off the car tonight - too noisy for my neighbours, but sounds good

pm if interested

ps I just replaced it with an Arvin 2 piece system, as it has a silencer and looks standard too. got it from BuyPartsBy

My car at the minute has standard front section with centre box and a scorpion back box.I think it sounds good and is not too loud, would'nt be real quiet either though but a good bit quieter than my last GTi which was just straight through with a peco back box.
