Private/vanity Reg - A Loophole In Age Related Plates?

Recommended Posts

Rupertfinch

In Northern Ireland we can pretty much stick on any UK age plate as long as it has been previously registered on a vehicle. We cannot directly buy numbers from DVLA. So that got me thinking.

If I purchased a desirable plate, mostly specific to a particular car make or model eg I do remember T16 PUG I think for not a lot (could be T19 PUG), transfer it to that particular model in Northern Ireland (with all the V5C documentation - which are identical to those on the mainland) could this vehicle then be transferred back to mainland UK and legally drive about with a much later plate and V5C to confirm all this?

It's a bit of a faff and as far as i'm concerned most personal vanity plates are gash, but those specific to a model do meet my seal of approval.

Furthermore, do I start a great business where people transfer the ownership of a vehicle to me, I re-register with their chosen plate and then 'sell' it back to them? Can see lots of people being interested in transferring ownership of a valuable car to me for free!!;)

rescue dude

Over here you can fit any number plate to a car as long as it isn't 'newer' than the car its going on.

ie I could fit T16 PUG to an 'W' reg car but not to an 'S' reg.

Its certainly an interesting idea.

Yeah, the newer plate than the car thing is understandable, saves someone who knows nothing getting mugged buying an older vehicle than the reg suggests.

I had just typed a spiel about how the idea came to me, but I'm worried someone will nick my idea and buy the plate I want to extort more money from me!!!

If anyone out there has a 10 registered vehicle and they fancy hosting a new reg for about 15 minutes (for a suitable amount of compensation) then feel free to get in touch!

Now I sound like a Nigerian scammer. Hello madame, show me the monies.
