Gti6 Cam Belt Kit Problem (have Tried Search)

Recommended Posts

miamigtimark

Hi,

Ive tried a search on this but could do with some help.

Im fitting a gti6 engine in the miami and at cambelt / waterpump change stage before it goes in the car.

Bought the cambelt kit from the stealers after looking at the 306gti6 site which recommended upgrading to the later 137 tooth kit (with larger tension pully)

part number 0831.71.

Now the old belts and tensioner pully are off i cant see how the new tensioner pully fits on the engine. Hole appears to be too small. Do i require any other parts to make the new tensioner pully fit. Im pretty sure the engine is from a phase1 car. Is it just easier to take the kit back and go for the 136 tooth kit.

TIA,

Mark

I thought general opinion on the 306gti6 site was to stick to the 136t kit?!

I'd personally use the 136 tooth kit, I believe most race engine builders do too.

The 137t kit needs the stud for the 136 eccentric tensioner removing and replacing with a long bolt.

GSF do the 136t kits at £48.50.

Thanks for the replys.

Welshpug: looked at topic "cambelt confusion" to get the info. Thought id be reducing risk of belt failure.

Just figured the bolt bit out just after i posted.

For info gen kit comes to £120 ish. Prob get charged 15% to return (£18). May as well stick with the 137 kit now. Another couple of bolts and trim of back cam cover and i should be there.

Any ideas how the tensioner errr keeps tension??

Mark: thanks for your input.

I have never used the later tensioner, but its iirc its one that you rotate up untill the pointer is lined up, then you torque it up and it stays put. The only down side is its made from plastic

I have never come across a Peugeot yet with a water pump having plastic impellers? not even with gen or none gen pumps? Yes VW and some others do and yes they are commen to fall off!

I agree the later tensioners is better in terms of its a spring loaded tensioner so keeps constant tension on the belt and is easier to set up, which is why some people said they liked it better, but it has been found the plastic pulley does break so be warned do leave it on there too long before changing it.

I preffer the old 136 set up plus its a lot cheaper!

I;ve seen a few with Plastic impeller's so fairly common, But even the pattern metal type one's I;ve known the odd 1 or 2 to fall off.

But another vote for th 136 type, I think the 137 type needs another bolt/fixing which Pug should sell as a Upgraded part

Definatley plastic impellers.

As for the fixing of the tensioner pully i need "self tap screws" part number 692231. cant cost more than a couple of quid for what it is. See how i get on anyway.

Thanks all for the help.

I just replaced a cracked plastic water pump in a mates Alfa V6. Its a total joke, I obviously replaced it with a proper metal one.

With the plastic pump the water flow was fine until about 2800RPM when it just stopped dead.
