Anyone Have Experience Of A New 205?

Recommended Posts

McDude

As I was reading through some threads it occured to me that there is a wealth of knowledge on this forum of what a 205 is like nowadays ie 20 odd years old and in different stages of refurbishment or decline.

Is there anyone on here that bought one when they were new? Or at least nearly new.

My first 205 GTi was a 94L which I bought in 2004 so even it was 10 years old at the time.

I currently have a 91H which I bought in 2007, it is tight as a drum, but it's like Trigger's broom in that nothing of any consequence is original.

I bought a 106 GTi new so I know what that felt like out of the factory.

So come on then, what is the youngest 205 (GTi preferably) you've owned?

I'm old enough but got my first one in 95 and that was a Turbo Technics - fitted at point of sale but hardly original!

Never been without a 205 since

I bought a new 1.9GTI in 1987 as a replacement for a MK11 Golf GTI 8 valve that I also bought new in 1986. The Golf was a huge disappointment being overweight and sluggish. The 205 on the otherhand by comparison was simply amazing in every department. I do remember however the hesitation on very light throttle in slow moving traffic that was a bit irritating but outweighed in spades by the sheer performance and fun that it provided.

I used to get a lift to school in a 1.6GTI back in 1985 - when it was only a week old!

I also used to get a lift to my Saturday job in a brand new 1.9GTI - the owner went on later to have a Miami Blue Dimma - ordered new!

I bought the following:

1987 1.6 in 1990 with 50k

1990 1.9 in 1992 with 40k

1991 1.9 in 1994 with 13k

All 309's though, so probably doesn't count

I reckon I covered in the region of 180k in those 3 cars and loved every mile... they were a bit more reliable when young.

(The 1.6 was an SR Injection... I can't remember the last time I saw one!)

I have one that is pretty much like new, well it should drive as such given that i rebuilt it from the shell-up with all new or refurbished mechanical parts!

Tbh it drives much the same as any other 205 in decent fettle, as it should!

Don't know if it counts, but the 1.9 I've got now (I bought it with 104 000 on the clock) was my mothers - she owned it from new. The day she went for a test drive she got back in the XR2 she had at the time and spent the next couple of miles convinced the handbrake was stuck on...

Yep, I bought my 1.6 in July 89 but couldn't pick it up until October 89 so it’s a G plate phase 1.5. Was one of the last 1.5s sitting in a field somewhere had the choice of a Red one without a sunroof or "Electrics pack" (Lecky windows and central locking) or Black with both so went for the black, picked it up from "Charters of Aldershot" for the grand sum of £6600 (tax free as I was serving in Germany at the time).

Did have the chance of a 1.9 for £7200 if memory serves me right but at the time only one company would insure me and that was for £3000 a year (21, 12 months no claims driving a right hand drive car in a left hand drive country!!!!!!) so 1.6 it was. I loved it from the moment I collected it hence why almost 21 years later I still have it (despite selling it back in 02, my wife bought it back for me in 04!!) as you can see from my sig its now parked up waiting for me to sort some bits out to get it nice again.

Car was spot on to drive and a complete revelation after my previous car (A Citroen GS Pallas!!) and the usual motley selection of RAF MT that we got on the Squadron, mainly metro's, land rovers and 4 Tonners in those days.

The only issues I have had with it in 19 years of ownership are, conked out on A1 near Leeming about 1995 (my fault I cleaned the engine and got water in the plug holes!!) burnt out voltage regulator in 1997, crash on M42 inn 2001 when some Tw@ pulled in front of me in traffic and hit the brakes (I got the blame ) rear beam was fubar'd when I bought it back, exciter lead to alternator came off in 07 and the gearbox doesn't like 3rd any more. and obviously a few exhausts, batteries and windscreens. sounds like a big list but would hazard a guess its above average for a 21 year old car (not sure what happened when I didn't have it but the state it came back in I doubt it was very well cared for :(

Anyway that’s a very long ramble from me so I’m off for tea!!!

Tbh in the great scheme of things that's a very short list and very cheap motoring for such a long time!

That is pretty impressive no major engine faults. Shows just how good those 1.6 engines really are.

She saw it in Kwik fit a few months earlier and spoke to the then owner who said he was thinking of selling, she asked him to give us first refusal if he did, next thing i heard was a phone call at work from Lorna " do you still the 205 back"

"Well i'd have to see what state it's in" said I

"Good, its on the drive, I've just bought it" says she

I was a very happy chappie until i noticed the seized rear beam !!!!

Still a pretty good surprise I thought :(

My 205 was about 15 years old when i bought it. It did come with the original sales recipt though, they paid £6450 for an XT in 1992 and as a final insult to me they paid an extra £245 for a sunroof :( Влагалище!

My first Gti was a C reg that was just under 2 years old when I bought it, so that was the youngest one i've ever driven. Sadly I was a skint student at the time so it had to be sold as it was bought as a money making scheme.

Was the money making scheme using it as a getaway car?

At least I'm not the only old bugger on here, I had mine back in 88 just over 12 months old, kept it for a year traded it in and a mate bought it for more than I paid for it, But back then values where High.

I bought mine when it was 15 years old, had knackered suspension, afm and steering rack, though with a massive service folder and 131k miles, engine had been rebuilt at 115k by a pug dealer
