Wheel Spin / Power Problem.

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, wonder if you can asnwer this for me.

I've noticed recently that when pull away quick, the wheels will spin but then adding more power the revs increase very quick but the wheels wont spin with same increase (like im revving in neutral)

Is this a sign the clutch is on its way out?

sounds like the clutch is slipping, if you put it in 1st and hold clutch in when revving high does it move at all?

i'm afraid it does sound like a clutch problem mate

iirc a correctly set clutch pedal should sit slightly higher than the brake pedal

Yep, the clutch pedal level looks fine. Does not show any other signs of slip, just this really.

Find a hill, start at 30mph and floor it in 5th gear. Does it do the same then?

Was cruising at 30mph this morning. Put it into 5th gear pressed the clutch in slightly and added some power to increase the revs. Then i let the clutch come up quick. Car did not "jerk" but built up speed slowly (with a very nasty clutch burning smell)

So it does look like my clutch is now slipping badly.

Whats a reasonable cost for a clutch change? Never changed a clutch before.

I had a similar problem once before but it was because the thrust bearing had slipped off its holder.

Changing a clutch isn't to difficult to do your self but it it is easier if you can rope someone in to help you, especially taking the box out and putting it back in (sometimes can be a bastard to line splines up on the shaft and you get serious arm ache!). You must make sure that you get the clutch plate central using some sort of locating dowel of the right diameter the tighten the pressure plate with the locater still in place.

I may be wrong, but before you start dropping the gearbox off, Id first check the cable isnt too tight as it may just need adjusting?
