Mi16 Running Issue

Recommended Posts

Guest oshmi16

Hi all.

Does anyone have any idea what's up with my 205 mi16?!It's a hard one to describe because it comes and goes, but I'll start from the start!

Under normal driving it behaves itself just fine, apart from the revs dipping after a hot start up,sometimes causing it to cut out,but I've learnt to live with this as been told that Mi16's do tend to be a bit tempramental with that, but I don't know if that's related to the main problem.Whitch is,when I give it some beans and get the rev's up,it will sometimes pull like a train no problems, but other times it'll be hesitant to get going and it starts to cough and splutter and bang when it reaches about 5500 rpm.The other night when I was driving home,it started to play up,so I pulled over and I realised that if my foot is on the deck it plays up,but if I back off a little, and hold the pedal at about 3/4 of the way down it bounces off the limmiter just fine.If I went for a spin in it today it could be just fine, theres no pattern. Just for you to know,I had the head re-built 12 months ago with re profiled cams.I know that it's running an MI16 loom.I fitted a new idle controll valve 3 months ago,and the problem stopped for a month or so,but it recently came back.Any help would be much appreciated.

Could be a number of things - lets start with a freebee, make sure you've got good clean earths - had this problem on my 8v with a poor earth.

I am by no way an expert, but the fact that the car is spluttering, (and popping from the exhaust?) suggests to me that this is an overfuelling issue as unburnt fuel is combusting in the exhaust hence the banging. Does the car stink of petrol? Coughing and spluttering and general bogging down can be signs that the engine is receiving an incorrect mix of fuel and air (i.e too much fuel). Perhaps some of the regulars can give a better indication, but I would suspect something to do with the fueling i.e.

Incorrect injectors/injector issue

ECU fueling control

Perhaps ignition timing?

Hope this is some food for thought, even though its not a specific answer

Thanks. It does smell a bit to be honest,it's been like that since I got it,so I never really looked into it because I just got used to it!An yes,it does bang from the exhaust, quite a lot of flames from time to time,so over fuelling does make sence. Somebody told me that the timing could be out by 1 tooth on the cams, but I thought if that was the case the problem would be there all the time? But thanks very much for the advice.I'm looking forward to possibly getting to the bottom of it!
