S16 Conversion

Recommended Posts

asdf205

Just picked up a 54k 306 s16. Im looking to put the engine + brakes onto my 205. Ive got the whole car complete but are there any additional parts i need to buy?

While the engine is out the car im changing all the belts and headgasket for piece of mind. Is there any conversion guides anywhere?

Have you looked, and searched?

Really it's not much different from an Mi or GTI6 conversion, although like the GTI6 the S16 is an iron block which is 11mm taller and you'll need to do clever things to make a decent exhaust manifold to downpipe and system transition.

It's not particularly difficult, but can involve buying a 4-2-1 system (circa £300) and modifying the bulkhead.

If you search you will find it's all been covered many times.

They are basically a 1.9 Mi16 so there are lots of post about them on here but i found this for you to kick you off

Click

But like i said there are loads of guides available on the forum about the Mi16 just try the search

Thanks for the replies. I did do a search but as s16 is only 3 letters the search doesnt come out too well. So its basically the same as an mi16 meaning i shouldnt have to buy any more parts (apart from manifold)?

You need to research your engines a little. Go and look in the pinned topic in the XU Maintenance section 'Useful XU Reference Booklets'.

Then you'll see that there are 2 flavours of Mi16 (well 2 main ones anyway). 1905cc alloy block and 1998cc iron block. The latter iron block Mi16 is also known as the S16 when fitted to the 306; but it is/was also fitted to at least the 405 and Citroen ZX.

Lower power than the alloy block but only just. More torque though IIRC, but the S16 has a complex ACAV inlet system. You'd be better off perhaps fitting a GTI6 inlet, but I'm doing this conversion now for someone into a 205 (and in a hurry) and it requires some creative pipework.

Otherwise, it's not too difficult if you understand what everything does.

I personally am not going to answer your questions on what to buy etc, as it really has been covered before and you should go and spend a few days 'swatting up' and learning.

That is the best advice you will get, there is a LOT of information on this forum, from some clever people.

I managed to drop in a gti-6 engine into an automatic 205 (changing to manual at the same time) with no problems at all from the info in here !

Not bad I have come from a Land Rover back ground and am colour blind

Actually the S16 manifold normally just bolts straight into a 205.

and mates to the std downpipe if the smaller exhaust manifold or just weld the flange of the S16 D/P onto the 205

Picked up the car and started working on it today. Ive done quite well for someone who has never even changed brake pads or anything mechanical before. I removed the wiring loom (not fun), the head and the driveshafts. Im looking at dropping the rest tomorow and building it back up.

Well I have to say I was shocked myself today to see an OE downpipe mate up straight away to the S16 manifold. I did one at Colin Satchell's workshop in Cornwall (my ZX engine into my old red 205).

I'm not sure whether the fact I had the bulkead modified already helped, but it was a simple, straight fit.

However: the S16 OE cast manifold is pretty crud really, so whilst it's easy to fit, it may be best to fit a 4-2-1 in the first place and get the extra power/torque.

I wouldn't. These off the shelf '205' 4-2-1 manifolds struggle to fit a 1905cc mi, never mind the taller xu10 lump. If your going to blow £300 in mind for this, I would go custom by someone that knows what they are talking about for a silar price.

These s16 conversions are a nice easy conversion actually. Certinly alot more simple

to a 6, but then you get more power reward!

Everything is going well so far. Id rather not spend £300 on a manifold but if its got to be done then i will. Can anyone reccomend a custom place to get this done?

The 4-2-1's fit with ease on the 1.9 Mi's,

As for a custom manifold you'll be looking at allot more money than that

Ive been looking at pictures of other s16 engines to get ideas for colours and my head seems different (the white piece on mine doesnt seem to be on others)

Hiya bud

by the sounds of thigs you too are intrested in a exhaust manifold for your S16

local fab shop near me said they could do it

and was wondering either if we both wanted it if theyd do it cheaper (could get conformation on price)

or if you find anywhere if you could pass us on the details :)

have found a few intresting things scouring the net and ebay, and just trying to figure out if a gti-6 manifold is chopable or if its cast, would save alot of hassel and money if it was ;)

cheers

chris

I may well be interested depending on price though. When are you looking to get this done?

well at the moment

the injection to carb is going to eat up my money this month so will be around august?

or werew you thinkg earlier

have been told (and dont know if this is a rumour) that the after market Mi 16 4 branches will fit!

but they theres also the possibilty of a convertion plate to adapt a gti 6 manifold and considering gti 6 manifolds are going on ebay for 30ish quid

this might well be the more cost effective

cheers

I havent heard of the gti6 manifolds with a plate fitting but that would most probably work out the cheapest option.

The later Maniflow style manifolds do fit (the head), but they have to be the ones with extra bolt holes.

it's something that were currently looking into, you will need to alter the ports as they don't match up but were trying to see if it's possible for the plate to do it all. I'll keep you posted on the progress
