Ignition Timing

Recommended Posts

Iv looked at doing the ignition timing with a light and i cant find any marks, iv looked in the manual and it says through the top of the gearbox, but iv only got slats in the top of the box and i cant see any marks on the flywheel, and the AFM gets in the way, is there any other way i can check the timing fairly accurately? As its a 1600 that doesnt seem to be very revvy

Probably like you, I've always preferred to set timing dynamically with a strobe light, but as you've discovered, it seems to be more or less impossible with these engines.

I followed forum advice, simply advancing the ignition until it pinks under load, then retarding until the pinking stops. Sounds crude, but it works.

Important provisos:

Everything else set correctly

Engine at running temperature

Mark distributor position BEFORE you do anything...then at least you have a known position to return to.

I've just done this on my own car.

I had to mark tdc myself using a dti gauge,I then stuck a mark on crank pulley and block and set the timing from there.

The adjusting until pinks then backing off is very crude in my opinion.

I did infact do this to start and my ignition timing was no where near close,I have now adjusted correctly and the diffrence is like night and day.Have a read of my thread mi 16 dizzy advice.
