Its a s*ite seal that pushes up against the diff casing. On OE shafts there is a raised diameter there so it stays put. Pattern shafts do not always have this, hence it goes where it wants.

Indeed it has. Either don't worry about it, or push it up to the diff casing and put a cable tie round the shaft so it stays put.
