The Next "classic's"

Recommended Posts

I'm hoping in a few years time my 1995 FTO (GPX MIVEC manual) will be a future classic. Hardly any made, all made for the Jap market.... gotta be a contender later on when their numbers dwindle further.

As for a £150 banger, you'd be hard pushed to find them as the scrappage killed off a lot of bargain basement stuff. Personally, I'd always wanted to do up an old Ford Sierra - nice bit of RWD old school fun. However, as its an old Ford, just make damn sure you're handy with the welding gun

I think the XR4i may become a classic, partly because of it's odd split rear quarter. I can't think of many other mainstream cars that have received such a major body change, only be produced in such relatively small numbers. And I think it's little quirks like these which capture the Classic Car Collector's imagination. Plus the wing, graphics and trim scream 80s!

EDIT: Just checked the prices of these and they already go for a lot more than I expected!

306 GTi-6 I reckon will probably be a classic as well, but not for a fair few years yet.

I think so, the fact that alot of them are knocking on now and being broken for parts instead of being repaired when they go wrong, will make a nice original example quite rare, although i can see the rallye being more sought after. I would say the Mi16 would be, but i'm pretty sure they don't exist anymore  If there are a few tidy examples left they might be worth keeping hold of.

I'd say an E46 m3 over an E36, the e36's are old now and theres an abundance of them in chav/wannabe drug dealer hands. The E46 has a bit more prestige to it i think, for now at least.

My 2 cents anyway....

Even the xs you'd struggle to get one that runs and is T&T for £150

There are so many fans to so many weird classics out there it'll be the things you never expect. I've got a friend who's an avid Maestro/Montego fanatic. I really wouldn't surprise me if in 30 years or so there'll be a City Rover owners club and concours competitions.

I did that for £170... close enough?

The E46 M3 can't become a classic before the E36 as it's newer and it's classier becasue it is newer and pricier. It's only the price that is allowing chavs in the E36 M3s, but IMO the E36 M3 is getting better looking again. A clean standard E36 M3 looks very nice. It may or may not achieve what the E30 M3 has but I would definitely say the tidy ones will appreciate at some point in the near future whereas the E46 has some way to go down in value yet.

The Multipla is a good call. I think this is also another criteria for future classics: A design that was unloved at the time, but nevertheless fresh and interesting.

With this in mind, a Renault Avantime is right up there.

I see what your'e getting at, but imo, the e30 was the m3 to have before the e46 was on sale, the reviews of the e46 are generally better than those of the e36, i've had 2 e36 m3's (not evo's mind) and whilst they were both good, solid, and f'in quick they felt as if they lacked something, maybe that's what defines a classic???

not all 'old' cars will become classics or sought after items.

I have an old BMW e23 (B10 Alpina) and although old, it is collectable and wanted as so few were made, but the base car is just not wanted at all today, although the e28/e24 6 series is. It's a shame as they're great cars. A Merc of the same era commands huge figures in comparison.

Tomorrows classics could well be the likes of the 190 2.3/2.5 cosworth. AMG Mercedes, BMW's own e38 750's etc I think the Alfa's being produced will be looked at as a Classic car and design (especially the GTA models) in years to come but I feel the term classic is too wildly applied these days.

Modern cars tend to have had their soul removed at birth, too many electronics etc where as the likes of the 50's to early 90's cars could still be maintained at home and provide seat of the pants thrills.

plus when you go to a show it''s nice to see the older quirky cars in a line, the BMW's (although I like them) are too sanitised in comparison.

Looking at the Ford's that have become Classic status over the last few years, I think my 2.5 V6 Ford Cougar if kept long enough will reach that status.

Ford for some reason seem to have a strange breed of people that make some unusual choices into collectable/classic. There's not many they have made that do not get to the status in the end.

Who would have thought the list below would today be considered classic?

I've had most of em as well!!!!!! Apart from the 60's stuff of course. :)

Capri. I/II

Cortina. I/II/III/IV

Escort I/II

Consul

Granada

Sierra Coss/Early XR4

Fiesta I/II

Anglia

Zephyr

Corsair

Popular

Even early Transits.

I think you will certainly add the special edition cars of modern time to the future classics, things like -

Impreza P1, Type R, RB

Clio V6

Focus RS

Jaguar XKR

I think the key to classics is generally the cars that you wanted, but couldn't have when you were young for some of the following reasons -

to expensive

wouldn't get insurance

not practical with kids (she wouldn't let you have it!)

couldn't afford to run it

all sold before you could get your name down

Ive got a Range Rover Classic that i keep in a barn that im slowly restoring to a concourse standard. The price of hasnt dropped for a long time now and as more and more are getting scrapped/sold as spares due to owners cant afford to run them so i recon i have a good chance of it gaining value in yearss to come. If not i will still have a nice car to drive around in myself .
