The Next "classic's"

Recommended Posts

flipperthebushkangaroo

I've been thinking (not somthing i do often) Following on from the Classic Cars thread, as in my reply i would like to do up an old mini with my lad. But they are getting pricey so what of todays £100- 150 bangers are going to be the next generation of classics or are todays cars just too bl00dy boring to ever get to that point?

Cincequento if it goes anything like the Fiat 500! There is not much you can get for £100 now as that is scrap value.

Who knows!

E39 M5's, E36 M3's, Evo 5 & 6's are going to become classics in years to come in my opinion, but who knows if it's actually worth sitting on one...

On another note, what are old Mini's worth? As i was offered a Sprint/Hillclimb prepared Cooper S spec Series 3 the other day, and it seemed fairly cheap!

Modern cars are too technical, too electronic, so I think they'll be a lot less have a go mechanics.

Intresting topic, I think its got to continue down the line of looking back at your first car, or the car you wanted!

Saxo? 106? Corsa? Fiesta?

Are these the next classics?

Perhaps, 106 Rallye and GTI, Saxo VTR/VTS, Corsa 1.8SRI, not bad cars, although still a touch over the £150 budget!

Most classics today seem to be cars that were fairly ordinary in their day, but that people today remember fondly, rather than the weird exotic stuff - Minis, rwd Escorts, that sort of thing. So I'd guess things like the Imprezza, sportier Focuses, BMW Mini, Fiat 500, those sorts of thing.

Cars last alot longer now though so it takes longer for them to become 'classic' imo. If there are still loads about then they don't seem special.

Longer? Are you sure about that?

They last alot less time than they used to.

defo agree with that, old cars were built to last new cars are a more 3 year disposable affair no one buys a car any more to keep for any major period of time

Just because people don't keep them and scrap them before they need to be, I still think a modern cars last longer than older ones. This is all IMO of course. :)

Cool thread....

Like been said before the old classics now were common cars years gone bye but with a bit of motorsport pedigree....

eg: Mk 1 escorts, sierra and escort cosworths, Fiesta Turbo, Nova GSi and GTE, R5 GT Turbo's and Gordini's, Fiat Uno Turbo, Lancia Delta Intergeralia, i could go on for ages

So in the reasoning i can come up with we got to look at some of todays motorsport greats......

Renault Clio Sport ? Citroen C2 ? Mitsubishi Evo ? Subaru Impreza ? Focus ST ? Honda Civic Type R etc etc

I've definitely noticed the classic shape scooby's drying up around here, don't see them too often whereas not so long ago there was too many.

I think the £150 banger bit has been missed again!

A standard S1 106 Rallye is a future classic, but all the floppy fringed students have put a 16v in them now so they are pretty rare. However never near £150. A 205 XS may come in this range though.

Even the xs you'd struggle to get one that runs and is T&T for £150

There are so many fans to so many weird classics out there it'll be the things you never expect. I've got a friend who's an avid Maestro/Montego fanatic. I really wouldn't surprise me if in 30 years or so there'll be a City Rover owners club and concours competitions.

I think they would have all rusted away by the time classic status came about!

Mk1 MX-5's would be my bet for a near guaranteed classic, and whilst you can pick them up cheap, they're not £150 cheap

306 GTi-6 I reckon will probably be a classic as well, but not for a fair few years yet.

£150 is restoration only territory though nowadays, the scrappage scheme saw to that.
