'classic Cars'

So our common interest is a 205, although most guys I know who don't own one still think the GTI is pretty cool.

 

There's a market for everything (sadly) and some people hold some less acceptable tin cans in high regard...take for instance my parents neighbour who is a Rover enthusiast, he's owned everything from a 214 estate, to a Sterling to a Metro, to one of those gay roadsters parading as an 'MG'...all disgustingly boring inside and out, a company who were tacky British regal personified.

 

To make matters worse, he's not keen on originality, more so on covering it in spotlights, LEDs and chrome surrounds.

 

My dad had a Rover 216 runaround for work and we both mutually agree that its the worse car we've ever driven, the interior looks like John McCrirrick and the exterior looks like a pigs abortion.

 

Needless to say I hate Rovers and hate modern MG drivers who insist its not a Rover with a few more bits of plastic melted on...

 

So what cars held in high regard to some, do you hate?

I'm not generally that bothered by other people's obsession with their chosen marque (though I draw the line at the Allegro). It's the people who insist on barrying up cars that I just can't relate to. And that's not a narrow minded attitude towards cosmetic modifications either, as I've always had an interest in the Hot Rod/Custom car scene, long before I was old enough to drive. I just can't relate to anyone who thinks it's a good thing to throw liberal amounts of s*it all over their car because they "want to be different" :) . It's often done on a limited budget, usually with little or no consideration to the overall look of the car, often with little skill or effort, and ironically they aren't doing anything different to the thousands of other clueless chavs. It's pathetically misguided, and that's why I can't relate to it.

The VW Beetle and VW Bus - They don't have a single redeeming quality. They're not fast, not reliable, not economical, not well-built, they're ugly as the devil's face and sound like a washing machine full of rocks, and thanks to the morons who pay thousands for the wretched things they're not even cheap any more. Horrible slow rusty nazi deathtraps!

 

Also I agree with the Capri. Appalling cars bought by people who think being unable to drive in straight line if a spot of rain has fallen is somehow a good thing. When I was at college in the mid-late 90s and all my friends were buying their first cars you literally couldn't give away Capris or Mk1/2 Escorts. There'd always be a couple in the classifieds for £50-100 ono, and they'd be there week after week because nobody wanted them. Now for no apparent reason people will pay £1k for a rusty shell. :)

totally agree with that, I definitely don't like the way they try and Porsche them up, my biggest hate is the price though......

I had a mk2 3 litre capri ghia.

Half leather.

Vinyl roof.

More rot on the body than metal.

 

It ran out of MOT and I left it in my mates p[arking space then sold it for £30.

This was back in 1992.

 

Jesus I wonder how much that woudl be worth now. Even with all teh work it needed it would be worth a packet.

 

Have to say it was a fantastic car. Really loved it then for it's hooligan driving style (hanging then a*se out at 80mph round corners - yeah we were drifting way before the fast and funking stoopid films).

 

My mate is into his old school fords. I love going in his collection.

Hard to believe that the morder day cars will one day be thought of as 'classics' but some of them surely will.

Can't say i like many of the above mention i reguard a classic's the likes of 205 of course and things like the RS500 and escort cossie lancia delta HF turbo merc cossie things like this that were actual engineering icons (as you can tell im a cossie lover deep down) dont hate me :)

I agree with the camper van thing, cool as f**k but would you really spend £20k+ on something that's never going to make it to where your going. They're also massive money pits, I know someone that has had a few but got rid because of the endless money they were putting into them...

 

Also can I add Honda Gold Wings......I know they're not cars but still crap, buy a proper bike...

I'm the same, bodykitted piles of crap with loads of lights and speakers, turd.

 

But as for classics, i can't actually think of anything right now, but i'm sure there's many that i view as pointless and stupid to remain as cars on the road and have money and time chucked at them, but then again many people probably hold the same view about 205s etc! :)

 

In fact, i've just thought of an example although given not as bad as some, Mk3 and 4 Escorts. They were sh!t when they were new and they're still sh!t now, they never handled, they rust like mad and they're not even pretty. :)

 

 

... I've always had an interest in the Hot Rod/Custom car scene...

 

You should pop along to the Hot Rod evenings at Ace Cafe then Steve! :D

Echo what baz said about mk3/4 escorts !

 

its funny how the 205 is often referred to as a classic, but the other gti of the same era the mk2 golf, even though it has a cult following, isn't really known as one? the mark one was slightly before the 205 and from what I gather is seen more as a classic.

 

similarly to the mk3/4 escorts, the mk3 golf? same age as the younger 205's, but never did it for me, how long till they (if they ever do) become classics?

 

 

I guess what I'm really saying is what actually makes a car a classic varies so much, most would say its age related, others would say because of what they are rather than age (confirmed by many insurers when I was looking for insurance for a 309 a few weeks back, none considered a 309 to be a classic!)

Never felt any love for the Triumph TR7 :) Always seemed to be in the gashest of colours.

But looking through the ads on classic car sites there seems to be many many more I do like than I don't.

I'm literally surrounded by these, neighbor opposite has one and a few doors down they have a friend who comes with one most weekends. That and I work for Fat Face and we have 1 in reception! :unsure:

Have you driven one? They look awesome in my opinion!

 

The spot of rain comment is half of the fun, don't need silly power to have lots of RWD fun! ;) Only problem is if you do take it out when its rains you won't have one after a few years, just a nice pile of rust. :lol:

He deems rovers as a whole as classics, there's no official guide, but they have the whole defunct thing on their side.

the cars that get me are the Allegro's, disgusting cars, trabants the same, early skodas are getting a following and in some of their competition guises look the part (ducks for cover!).

 

Austin Metro's, no thanks unless its a 6R4..

Austin Princess, urgh, the only car I felt see sick in.

 

Loads of others I'm sure.

 

But I'm a fan of the old Capri and many of Fords products. 3.0s, 2.8i's I've had a few. Mk1 Mexico brilliants cars.

 

But maybe those that cosset their original allegro frown on those that like cars that are common on the old car scene. I'd rather see one or two weird motors than rows of the same car like an MGB but each to their own.

I used to own a chevette HS with the 2.3 twin cam 16 motor in.When me and my dad bought it it was running twin strombergs, but the owner gave us

set of 48 dellortos so had them setup and jesus was that thing was quick. I wish we had that now with its dog leg box and tartan interior.

I'd love a Scimitar - RWD (with a proper beefy rear axle), big engine bay for v6/v8 swaps - a real Shooting Brake :unsure:

 

In fact I'd put an LS1-engined GTE SE5 on my 'really REALLY want' list.

 

I'm with the 'dub haterz, though. Very poor cars to start with (from personal experience) and the 'scene' is an complete anathema to me in terms of car modification.
