Recommended Posts

hey all i retarded my ignition timing about 1mm hoping it may improve the fueling but it doesn't seem to have made any difference, should it not make any difference to fueling?

cheers.

ignition timing, as the phrase suggests, is ignition related and has nothing to do with the fuelling.

you might see an improvement in consumption by setting the timing correctly due to the engine producing more power and torque and needing less throttle for a given speed.

Best to set your ignition once you are sure everything else is correctly set. Important also to use minimum 98 octane fuel...lower octane is cheaper but will cost you more both in terms of increased consumption & poor performance.

Essential to start off by marking present position of distributor, so at least you then have somewhere to return to. car needs to be fully warmed up, procedure then is to advance the distributor in increments, until you reach a point where it pinks under load...say accelerating in fifth at 30 odd mph. Then simply retard the ignition little by little until it stops pinking.

If you are new to this & don't understand "pinking"...it's a sort of rattling noise...simplest way to ensure you recognise it is just to advance ignition a lot & note the new noise! Don't of course run it for long like that as it will eventually damage the engine..it is the sound of petrol exploding as opposed to burning.
