Cti Hood Inner Lining (wadding)

Recommended Posts

Yes, that's right, my CTi is going so well I'm actually finding other things to do on it!

The hood was replaced by the previous owner around 2002...it isn't a factory one, but I assume the headlining and wadding liner between that & the outer roof covering are original.

The previous owner did a passable job with the new roof, but not great, so I can't be sure it was re-assembled correctly. The wadding, contained in a cloth covering, passed under the front hoop (the one above the driver & passenger heads), but over the hoops behind. Is that correct? It would seem more logical to me that if it goes over the rear hoops, it should go over the front one also.

Also....there is no obvious fixing for the wadding at the front...is there some way this should be attached to the front stretcher, ie the metal hood frame that clamps above the windscreen? The headlining itself has loops formed to take a metal strip which engages with lugs in said hood frame, so that's not an issue.

As far as I remember,. the wadding sat on top of all hoops. Here's a rfather poor pic of mine with the cover removed

I have a vague recollection of it being glued to the front rail - but not sure.

Hi Steve

Many thanks. Heavy rain & thunderstorm last night, so just as well the first time in 2 weeks I've been able to fully close the roof! Of course having nearly finished, other problems appear! The headlining just dropped away from the centre hoop...it was rivetted to the hoop via a steel strip through loops in the lining, but the rivets had corroded through....so previous owner had taped it back with duck tape....amazed it's stayed up so long. Really need another headlining as managed to burn a hole through this one....had a shaving mirror on parcel shelf, covered over with dashboard parts...but mirror exposed when I re-assembled the dashboard & of course the sun did the rest....guess I was lucky the outer hood wasn't damaged, & indeed that the whole thing didn't go up in flames.

Then I thought I'd open glovebox to see if I had cable ties in there to fix the headlining....& realised the glue repairs I'd done to the crappy lock assembly had come apart. "Superglue" is great....for about 10 minutes. Back to Araldite.

If anyone else can be more specific as to how inner roof lining, the wadding, should be attached at the front, I'd be grateful.

The inner 'wadding' should be glues to the front metal part of the roof that clamps down onto the windscreen.

They are usually in very poor condition dur to water ingress causing the fabric to rot.

Mine is at the car trimmers at the moment being repaired.

I have taken several roofs to pieces to salvage the best wadding I can get, and as I did so I took photographs to remind me where everything goes when it goes back together.

If you need any more seals etc let me know as I have a decent collection of spares now.

Hi Richy

That would be great. As stated I'm in France...(but I have found a house to move into in September), but will be back in UK in August...in fact staying with friends in Cardiff, so not too far away if you can find that lining.

Surely the insulation must be just wadding in a breathable bag? Do we reckon it is easy to replicate? My mum has done some quilting and embroidery before so it might give her something useful to do!!

Hi Henry,

Absolutely, but Richie & I are talking about a replacement headlining (slightly off topic!) as mine is burnt through. The inner lining/wadding is actually surprisingly good.

I think Bouver (Simon) was getting one made as he was missing one. From memory, try PMing Floodys as he had one for sale at one point that I nearly had as a spare!! Mine has a couple of little dirty marks on it but not that noticable.
