Gearchanging

Im having my 8v full service ,

oil filter

fuel filter

spark plugs

ht leads

bilstein front shocks, as ones cracked so changing both.

dizzy

I need some advice on which oil to use , its my daily road car.

Now im not really enjoying the gear changing, theres no real play but when im down them A / B roads and booting it , you know what im getting at. I cant really change the gearbox to a 1.6 although would enjoy it better but i do a mixture of back roads and motorway so high revs not really ideal. I spoke to SBC they suggested if i can remember correctly a quickshift gear thingy for £50. can anyone shine some light on it if possible, is it practical and is there any real benefit ?

Cheers

after fitting new bushes to Dr Sartys EVOII's gearstick along with new quadrant bushes and recent Pugracing gear rods all greased up, I'd leave the throw of the standard stick alone, getting all the unwanted play out shortens the throw quite a lot

Get Miles gear linkages kit or BBm do a kit. That will make the gear changing more precise. :o

I'm confused. Are you asking about how to make the actual shifting quality a bit tighter and precise, with a shorter "throw" (less movement required of the gear stick to go between each gear)? Or are you asking about gearboxes with shorter ratios, so the car accelerates quicker and stays in the power band?

i have new bushes on the subframe and at the bottom of the gear stick and added 18-20mm to make it a quickshift and that feels good!

Yes i wanted to know how to make gearshifting tighter. (and would it accelerate faster too)

thanks

No, it's not going to make the car accelerate faster by improving the shift mechanism. You can argue that it'll allow you shift between gears fractionally quicker, which is irrelevent unless you live in a Fast & Furious film or write for Max Power.

But improving the shift mechanism will make things much smoother and more precise, making the whole experience much more pleasurable (there's no fun in playing with a floppy knob, is there?).

The basics are:

1 - Gear rods from Miles. They have a secure fit so there is minimal play in them and they don't have a habbit of popping off like worn OE rods do.

2 - Convert the L shaped bracket on the subframe to a quickshift, either by lengthening the long arm or shortening the short arm. This is all covered in past topics.

3 - Replacing the OE bushes in the L lever and base of the gear stick with either brand new OE bushes, bronze bushes, or needle bearing bushes.

Aside from this, general maintenance

1 - check the L lever is secured to the subframe as it's bolt works loose

2 - Check your gearbox is secured to the engine by all of it's bolts

3 - Replace any worn engine mount bushes (particularly the bottom one)

4 - Replace gearbox oil with new oil of the correct grade and the correct amount.

Just use the standard engine oil recommended by the manufacturer. It'll be in the owner's handbook or Haynes manual.

I think it's been said already.

- Fresh gearbox oil will make the cogs swap with a bit more ease (but won't rectify a shot gearbox)

- Changing the linkages and/or bushes on the pivot arms will make your nob feel less floppy (thanks GLP - I'm now thinking of your floppy nob)

- A 'short shift' kit will make the throw of the lever shorter

None of the above will actually make you accelerate faster (other than the improved shift time) but will add to owner enjoyment.

I have the Skip Brown short shift the original post enquired about. It is a change to the pivot arm as per other short shift kits. In conjunction with getting the bushes and linkages right it is a really nice gearshift, but I imagine if fitted in isolation it would be short and imprecise rather than long and imprecise.

Mine's a knob, not a nob. Don't try and make it 1/4 shorter than it actually is, I have a wife to convince me of that thanks very much

i did read somewhere that the quickshift kits dont fit under the gti6 manifold, is this true?

only asking at shift isnt "floppy" but 1st gear seems abit far away for my liking

Speak to Zebedy about that, he's got a quickshift fitted to his GTI-6 but has had to have some bits moved about.

Changed gearbox oil , Fitted Miles quickshift kit and took it for a short test run and could feel the difference, Its a shorter shift and feels really good.
