Can You Replace The Ignition Lock Without The Original Key

Recommended Posts

qwertyuiop7

Lost my only key to my Gti, i have just got out of a hospital after a major op, and my head is in bits, can't remember where i had them last, turned the house upside down and no joy. The car is unlocked so i can get into into it no bother, a full lock set from a breaker is about £40 so thats not bad but i can't imagine swapping the ignition barrel is easy without its matched key?? If it was it wouldn't be much of a theft deterrent.

So how do i swap it, or is it a big hammer job??

Cheers

Phil

im guessing you dont need the original key to swap the barrel..

the ignition barrel isnt a deterant at all.. all you have to do is smash it off and turn whats left with a screw driver

to change the barrel you insert key wiggle the key and the little plunger at the side you can press out and the barrel is out.

but with no key hammer a screwdriver in and use it as a key.

i had the same prob after leaving my car for a year, the metal isnt that strong and its easy to drill out to the width of the key, so can either use a screwdriver to turn on, or remove the barrel with min damage.

The other option presumably is to replace the upper steering column section that contains the barrel?

This is the option that I went for on one of my 205s as the ignition barrel is actually a lot stronger than I thought it would be and no end of smashing and bashing seemed to have much of an effect.

P.s. My Dad found the lost key a couple of days later :)

I found it very easy last time I did this job. I just drilled it out. But as with any drilling job, Quality drill bits are the answer.
